Funny. Us in the south are known for mild winters and Haydees summers but I am more likely to worry about plenty of bedding or rags or straw in the winter. LOL. The Northern folk with their mild summers more worried about summer. LOL Well, I recon we all got to have something to worry about to make us feel good about ourselves.

way more worried about keeping me cool than i am my dogs.... if they cant take it in the pen how are they gonna be able to perform at night

i don't work when its this hot, so i take a trip down to the kennels 4 times a day to give them fresh water. last yr i bought some new kennels and made good use of a morton cattle barn thats open on the south side. the kennels are under a roof now so there shaded good with plenty of air flow. and i didn't have to shovel snow out of them last winter.. i'm happy and the dogs are happy. oh i just check the thermometor on the truck, it's 102 at 2pm.

Its HOT alright. 101 today

Dogs in shape can take the heat way better than the dogs not getting hunted.

Guess I wont be able to cut loose till after midnight tonite.

When its this hot the last thing I care to do is coon hunt. My dogs are set up similar to Dave's, under an enclosed lean-to on 3 sides open to the south, I've got a fans on each end blowing some air around and water the dogs twice a day and check on them couple more times. I've got a litter of pups in an elevated wood floor kennel with shade wraps on top and on the side. I put a little kids pool in there full of water so they can romp around in and cool off. That kennel gets a lot of afternoon / evening sun so that helps.
I tried to fish last evening. I was all set up and planned to fish most the night. I fished from about 6pm-10pm and all I caught was a huge snapping turtle and a small willow cat right before I left. I was soaking wet sitting there in my own sweat. My beers wouldn't even stay cold after being on ice. Right before I left I flipped on my LED light and the bugs surrounded me. I said the hell with it and headed for the house. The entire time I was thinking how miserable it would be to be coonhunting in this weather.

hot!

I built my kennels under a 150 year old maple tree. The shade is awsome. In this awful heat I freeze a gallon of water in a milk jug and put it in the box with them. The dogs love it, and will lay right next to them.

I have covered runs with concrete floors; I have 3/4 covered ends on the runs. That way they can regulate their own heat by moving to a different place in the kennel. I feed lightly during the summer, even the dogs I am hunting. I want to retain muscle and some body fat, but no more in hot weather. I hunt four to seven nights a week year round. The dogs I am hunting regularly are conditioned and climitized, when you lay them up for long periods and try to hunt them that's when they suffer.

I also feed around 9:00 AM and fill the water pans and "soak down" the runs; this lets the dogs keep cool about all day.
