Oil Rigs

Anyone worked on them? How is it out on the gulf? Do any of you have contacts?
I grauduated trade school in 2010 with a combination welder diploma. I can weld anything non-ferrous or ferrous with any welding process. Since I have graduated I haven't been employed any longer than 12 months without a layoff(currently layed off). So I was thinking about going out on the ocean to work on a rig seems like great pay and steady for the most part. I travel most of the time for my trade so for my family it wouldn't be any diff to them so that's not a concern. I'm a hard worker with a great skill set. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also if it helps I'm 6g, 4g,3g, certified in gtaw, smaw, GMAW.

I'm thinking about the oil rig option as well. I'm a sonar tech in the navy and I hear they pay good for sonar techs to inspect their pipelines

I have worked in tank farms, refineries and oil fields for 10 yrs. I have been lucky and only layed off for a total of maybe 3 months in 10 years. Good trade to get into, oil is what makes the world go around. Try googling storage tank welders for petroleum products.

Try finding matrix tank services, I think they are classified as boiler makers. Good crew of guys work for them that live down around etown.
