how do i test the swimmers on a stud dog

I have a old male direct out of nitro. and i would like to test him foe breeding .
The vet wants 500$ to tezt him
is there any cheaper way to test him .

A reach around and a microscope.

Manualy Collect on Him then Take a Gander under a Microscope ...

That will give you a General Idea .. Its Best to Dilute it with Saline to get a Better idea about X 10

i know it just takes one but i would like to keep this old hounds blood running around .
hes one hell of a coon hound..

Min Amount is around 5 million Per ML For Natural Breeding . US norn. is 150 Million per ML to Freeze .. 100 Million for Fresh Chilled

Breed him to a female. If she has pups his semen is good. If not, he may not.

In my experience even a good Vet can look through a microscope at sperm and can't tell if its good enough to get pups.

There's more to it than if there are "swimmers". How many sperm, how healthy they are, whether they are deformed all play a role. Other factors such as the fluid they are in and some things that vet's don't even understand come into play when determining if a semen sample will get pups.

Leroy Perry at Galaxie Genetics was a good ol boy, he woulda checked him out for you at a very decent price, he just wanted to help out the fellow sportsman rather than make a buck. Too bad guys like him are few and far between. RIP Leroy!

500 dollars? Wow! I had my Homer dog checked a few years ago, before I had him collected, and it cost me under 100 dollars. Your vet must not like doing the reach around lol.

run him to nevergone he will test him and store the semen for 200 i think

andy kelly at addison vet clinic in addison mich charges me $40 to check the swimmers and inseminate a female.

I know the old blood is vetting hard to find.
This old male is a coon hound and should have been put in some hunts when he was younger.
I just want a litter of pups off him before its to late.

if the dog is as old as i am thinking ,it would be alot of work on the old boy trying to naturally breed. even if his semen is good he may not be able to perform. AI is the only way to go with breeding an old male dog. to me it is much more logical to have a vet collect it,check it and breed the female with AI. he can also check the female and tell what day she is ready. you know right there from the git go if she has any chance of that male getting her preggers.most guys with a decent female worth breeding and they want to breed aint gonna wanna let her heat slip by on a maybe can do it stud dog. you will have to have the bitch there in heat any way so the male can get the smell for him to be collected unless he has been collected a few times. when they have been they get excited soon as they see the vet with the cup and glove.
ole mack is a half brother to nitro. he was 11 when i bred him the first time, after 6 litters he is very fond of my vet andy kelly. he is the son of ole doc kelly.last time i had mack checked he had no swimmers,he is gonna be 15 next week. the guy with the female still had time to get her to mr clean to be bred once we found mack was not gonna be able to cover her..

larry, you sure the vet aint thinking you want it checked for freezing and storage. with an old male even if he has live sperm and can get a bitch pregnant,he may not have the quality of semen it needs to be to be frozen. any trace of blood and they can't freeze it. but he could still sire a litter.

Ive found a vet that will chech him fir swimmers .
but this vet is a hog breeder . that mostly handles ai in a hog farm but i guess he knows how to at least check the old hound

The old hou.d is direct if nitro and is coming 13 years old.
and if he cant produce i.dont wana let a.heat cycle.get away .
