Money Bench Shows

I know this has been done before, what does everyone think about awarding prize money for Bench shows?

As a program

I am talking about a program not just a one time deal, what do you think? There may be a buddy buddy system, or it may appear so, money or no money will not change that, so what else?

if there were more honest judges that picked the hound on their merits (or lack thereof) and not for pay backs and who's who, then it could work. until then it will make the "buddy buddy" stuff worse.

I agree, Im not a bench show expert nor have I personally ever shown a dog but I do know the breed standards..From an outsider looking in I see things as in a dog wiinning every event until somebody else buys it then never being picked again or a dog thats been shown all over the place and never winning until so and so buys it... Seems theyres a lot of politics involved..

Careful, Careful

QUOTE "If there were more honest judges". Are you saying there are crooks judging bench shows today?. there is no such thing as "MORE HONEST" a person is either honest or a crook. POINT a woman is either pregnant or she is not .
Let's ask this question , just because a person's OPINION is different from another person opinion about a dog does that make that person a cheat and a lier. nope there a few judges I do not agree with their opinion, does that make them dishonest say a crook and a liar, nope I just don't think much of their opinion.
As long as judging is based on opinion's there will always people who differ, those who differ are not allways correct.
I wonder why say when someone buys a horse that is not winning and puts it with another person and it starts winning or the reverse, would you say it has something to do with the person handling the horse? I would, same thing with a dog.
Be careful when you question someones integrity, you know there are a lot of judges out there and someone toes just got steped on.
In closing I WONDER if a judge ever thinks the people that they did not pick think THEY were honest?. you know the door swings both ways sometimes.
Have a good day JUDGE where ever you are. H L

while i'm not the expert on the subject, i would favor an option of paying vs. trophies at the local hunts etc. depending on where you get your awards from, it is likely the single biggest expense you have. It is also the most aggravating in terms of having to get them for the date etc... As for hnding back and entry fee, or some specified amount of cash, thats easy, fast, and most folks smile when they see old Georges face going into their pockets. Yes, i am sure we could get into all kinds of politics, but if each partcipant, spectator, and judge will just read the rules and standards, and know that they are in fact honor rules, and abide by such, then many many problems would be eliminated. While as of this date, i haven't judged a large scale bench show, i have judged some state level shows, as well as some rqe's, and i can honestly look at myself in the mirror, at least in my mind, know that i picked the best dog available that day, with no outside influences. Only conflicts i have ever experienced is in my own mind, when the hounds are so equal to look at. Yes money brings conflicts, but it is an easy way for the clubs to reward winners. On flip side, I have seen the faces of young and old alike, men and women light up when they get that trophy or plague to commenorate their dogs win also, so i guess its a to each his own, but we here in our club will keep the trophies going, as troublesome as they can be at times..

Thanks for the comments, as with everything there are two sides. If you were going to pay out, would you pay at different levels or just one overall?

I agree in some cases the handler may have something to do with it.. I also know that the judge can see things us as spectators may not be able to see.. As for the toes getting stepped on, if their not guilty they would have no reason to be offended.. I also have a question not out of sarcasm but out of pure lack of knowledge... How much does opinion sway your decision when you are judging based on a clear set of rules and standards? Thanks Jon Millwood

Paying money in bench shows is the worst idea ever. Bench shows are 100% totally subjective. One dog cannot beat another dog. Wins are handed out.
Bench shows are fine but paying money would be the worst thing that ever happened.

I can only speak for myself. Opinions do not matter to me. I pick a dog based on the standards of that breed. If there are 2 that are close then it may come to personal preference. If ppl are upset by my choices that is their right, but I make a decision based on the standards not on the owner/handler...and I can sleep at night.
