nite hunt newbies q?

When you get a newbie on a cast you are judging....do you cut them some slack? or do you play hard ball?

Gotta go by the rules without being a jerk, otherwise the next hunt they go to and they try the same thing you gave them slack on,but next time a judge calls them on it. Then they get all upset and call the firm judge a hardnosed jerk for going by the rules. But if they firmly but with an explanation get set straight from the get go they usually won't do it again. And sometimes by being leniant a dog might win that maybe going by the rules shouldn't have.

Gotta help the new guys man. If you leave a bad taste in their mouth they don't come back, then they tell other people not to go to hunts. Think about how many less people this sport has for that very reason. Have to have someone to keep it going when we are all gone right?

I always appreciated it when the guys just told me what to do next time after I screwed up. I used to have a female that should have been dual grand but I was young and cost her a lot of casts. Wish I had her back so I could finish her out now that I'm a little older and wiser. Don't let things slide it will create bad habits. When new guys see that they are causing their dog to lose they'll learn real quick what to do and when to do it.

Neither, it's a teaching opportunity. Follow the rules, explain what your doing and why, offer suggestions about doing things differently, congratulate them when they do things correctly and answer questions as best and honestly as you can. There are a few things I would be inclined to give a one time "mulligin" on with a warning and instruction about though (ie. striking on or before the 3rd bark seems to be almost an automatic problem for "newbies"). Of course it is much easier to teach/coach a new handler if you're not the judge. I hope I'm as good a teacher/mentor as the guys that helped me out when I was getting started working on my "addiction" lol.

Jay, are you planning on our July Slam ? Hope to see you there.

as a newbie myself i can say that out of the 4 nite hunts that ive been in only 1 of them was done right, dont get me wrong i had a good time on all of them but only 1 was done by the rules. they where all bending the rules to fit what they wanted and i also got cut a some slack to so it was fair that way but i would sooner do it by the rules and learn that. the most thing i am learning is who you can trust and who you cant. i feel i will get beat a lot till i learn but once i learn you can bet ill know how to play the game the same way i was shown, thats just what i think. jmo.
