seizure

my 2 yr old plott gyp had a seizure this morning at 3:30AM. the other dogs woke me up with all their crazy barking. it was rough but after awhile she pulled out of it. today she seemed ok. she was eating, drinking, peeing and pooping as usual. tonight she had another seizure. this one wasn't as bad. i've considered the heat but this morning was the coolest time of the day. there was nothing to stress her much. she's has pletty of clean water. hasn't had any shots lately. this one tonight is the 5 one she's had that i know of. all were several months apart until now with two close together. i've read quite a lot on on dog sites but nothing seems to fit her at all. do any of you have any ideas of what i might do or what the futher might have in store for her?

Could be one of many reasons why head trama you may not know about low blood sugar kidney issues best bet is have the vet do some blood work best of luck

i seen it before . been awhile tho when i was young there was a wolf hunter had a dog like that would happen when out huntin and in the yard . a candy bar would straighten it out . i would go to the vet and have blood work done on the gyp . could be the pancrias ain't producing enough sugars , just like diabeties in humans . good luck hope it works out .

check it out with the vet. but i feed puppy food to my dog no more seizures the dha in puppy food stops them.

the dog just had another one. this one was mild. now she is just standing around like she's about to go into anothe one. i'll take her to the vet tomorrow. i'm not optimistic about her making it through the night.

You might think im crazy but I had a dog that had them a lot. I got on here and asked about it and a couple old timers told me to go get some honey and give it to him something real sweet, just squeeze some in her mouth trust me it works, it has something to do with the dog not getting all it needs in its feed like it has low sugar. I did not beleave it at first till I did it the dogs stopped having them and was fine I would just give her some like twice or three times a week. My dog was having two or three a day and he never had another one. Hope this helps if it doesn't I'd take her to a vet.

Seizures

I've never had one of my hounds have seizures but have raised several Siberian Huskies and had one male dog that had them. I found out later on that it's an inherited genetic disorder, the vet gave me Phenabarbotal tablets which we gave him twice a day, as long as he was medicated he never had any seizures that we saw but he died during the night at only three years old and I always figured he probably had a bad one that caused it.

i just got back from the vet. she put the dog on phenabarbital, 8 mg tab, twice a day. the vet visit cost $265.00. i think that's outragous. the medicin cost only $23.00.
i wonder if the medicin will hurt her hunting.

you may be able to get it at pharmacy or mail order at a different price. it doesnt hurt to check. but at least you got her some treatment.

siezures are neurological. something in the brain is gittin too much or not enough chemicals that is produced. yes vets can give u medicine to prevent the siezures. it balances out the chemical problem.

had a beagle
that would get them while hunting ..carried sugar cubes popped one in his mouth and ready to go again

i gave my plott one tab of phenabarbitol a few hours ago and just now she finished having her worst seizue yet. i gave her the 2nd tab. i hope she can make it through the night.
Does anyone know what the futher looks like for a dog having so many seizuers. A doctor friend of mine told me that the dog sustains a little brain damage with each seizure. if so, this dog won't be good for much after a while.

Hope your dog gets thru this. We have a BnT with seizure disorder. Our has had extensive treatments at a Big Vet Univ. and hospital. We have ours on phenobarb AND a more expensive medication that is less commonly used in dogs but is for his unusual form of seizures. On the 2 meds we have not had him experience another seizure. I'm glad because seeing a seizure is the most alarming thing I"ve had to deal with! Bob was equally shook up by it....
IF you can afford it and the dog is still alive... It may be worth getting your dog to a larger vet hospital.... ??? I know that there is another treatment for use during a seizure. If I recall it is the use of valium to stop the current seizure. I think the valium is given as a suppository in the dogs rectum.

I hope your dog has a full recovery... seizures are awful.

Most drugs take a few days to build up to therapeutic levels in the blood stream, I'm not a phamacist so I don't know if that is true of phenolbarbitol. As far as the dog being able to hunt? Once the drug has had a chance to stabilize her I think you will find that she will be able to do everything she was doing before. I had a Golden Retriever that had epilepsy which we treated with phenelbarbitol as well. To this day she remains one of the hardest hunting pheasant dogs I've owned and she lived to nearly 11. I hunted her 'til she was 10 with no problems from the epilepsy. Even on the medication she would still have an occassional siezure though. However they were much shorter. less severe and very infrequent. Good luck with your dog!

i'm giving her the phenabarbitol and she hasn't had anymore seizures. but she acts very skidish. she seems to be afraid of everything. she used to have an insatiable appitate. now when i offer her a treat she doesn't recognize it. she will take it but it takes her awhile to decide if she wants it.

i have had two throw seizures one would have them anytime he got excited usually first coon kill of season brought it out of him. put him on med and he got extremely mean took him off meds and gave him karo syrup once a week in his feed seemed to help alot. look at gums and see if they are white instead of pink worms can cause it also

took her hunting last night with the rest of the pack. i almost always road hunt and this dog has roaded at least 200 miles. last night she wouldn't get out front of the truck. she just followed. i had to keep stopping to let her catch up. she never got off the road and into the bush. she did get infront a moment but when the dogs left her she got behind the truck. she was startled every time one of the dogs ran past her. this morning she seemed very happy and kept barking at the door to get me to come outside. i'll have to see how this works out.

but I'm not sure taking a dog that is having seizures and roading them is the most prudent thing to do. I would maybe let the dog take it easy for a little while and make sure the meds are actually working.

The only interesting tree hound is an accurate tree hound.

I have a lab that has seizures and has been on phenobarbital for 5 years now. He has only had one since, when I was out of town for a couple of days and my neighbor was feeding him and forgot the meds for about 3 days. The vet started the dosage off high and we have backed it down to just 1 pill a day now. When he had his last seizure it was a bad one and he acted funny and was scared of everything for a week while he was at the vet getting blood work. The vet thought it messed something up in his head and didn't think he would straighten out. We took him back home and kept him in the house and in about another week he straighten out to his old self. I buy a 100 pills at a time from my vet for about $12. I have a female lab also who eats the same food he does and she has never had any problems. I had another female off the same father as him and she had 1 seizure one time and it wasn't bad, till I guess she had another one later that night and I found her dead in the pen the next morning. She was just over a year old and my male dog didn't have seizures till he was over 4 years old. I have had 3 litters of puppies with him by 2 different females and to my knowledge none of his pups has had them but, I haven't been in contact with them for some time.

I had a6 month old crossbreed Leopard and walker I had been walking in the woods with . I live three hundred yards up a farm to market road from a busy US highway. I turned him out and a crap cramp cought me so I went inside to do my business . Evidently a neighbor boy came walking by and the pup followed him to th big road . When I got up I couldn't call him and I found him dead in the big road. I drug him off and fixinto get my collar and he kicked so I hauled him straight to the vet. When I got there he was standng up pantinting, The vet figured he had had a siezure or either stuck his head in front of an oncoming vehickkle and got knocked coo coo. He never gave him anything but he gave me a 45$ bill and he ain't never had a stroke or bin to a vet sinse in 6 years.
