Question about Curs to Coonhunters

I have only seen these dogs in pictures (Blk Mouth) and don't know anyone that has/had one. Maybe y'all can help. What kind of competition can you put them in? Can they go in a night hunt? Do hunts have seperate casts for curs? Seperate hunts on seperate nights? Do they allow them on a coondog cast? What about showing? They look like pretty decent dogs, I have heard that they get a little mean though, but every website I found had a picture of them with a kid draped on them (gotta love that!)

Thanks.....as always

Your curious novice

Jamie

I owned a black mouth cur.Didn't care for it much.Never made a good coondog.I think UKC has a seprete orginization for cur dogs. But as far as cur dogs and coon hunting. You better buy u a Hound and by that I mean a Bluetick.......lol.......Keep em treed ..............REBELBOY........

Curs,

You would be better off with a Treeing Lepord Curr, I have never seen a Black Mouth that trees, Look in the Curr and Fiest Section.

The curs and fiest compete seperate from the hounds. There are several registries that offer cur/fiest events, they include squirrel hunts and coon hunts, and some are sperated by size of the dog. Most Blackmouth's are silent on the trail, some people like this and others don't,if you're looking for a cur to competition hunt with,go with a original mountain cur, treeing cur,or stephens cur. There attitude is a willing to please and protect that the hound doesn't have,it depends on how they're raised.

I had a Blackmouth cur about 7 years ago, He never made much of a coondog, but I kept him around for a while because he was mean as a snake, and kept the salesmen away....You couldent give me another one.

I've never been around blackmouth curs, but I've had some Kemmer Stock dogs that were great coon dogs, as well as big game and coyote decoys. They are totally different than my blueticks and could not replace them, but I sure would love to get another one.

ive only had a few curs. had one good leapard. one kemmer - loved thos two dogs 3-4 others didnt impress me a lot. -to get the most out of them they need to be raised as a farm dog or a pet.. i agree they are different then a hound. i wouldnt want one if it s going to spend a lot of time chained up. anyways thats the little experience i had with them. if you have a farm and want a dog can do anything --get a cur.. theyl get the cows ,watch your kids, guard your house and still tree a coon. least i knew a couple like that. pete
