Old forum question-Boone vs. House

To refer to the old forum about what has the Boone dogs done compared to the House line of dogs. Nobody has done more for this sport than Joe House has....... What has old Boone ever reproduced any way?

Posted by Justin Smith on 06-25-2003 02:49 AM:

Old Harry is behind more of todays' powerhouses than any other stud. Boone has a good shot of Old Harry and it shows .

Posted by Joe Bone on 06-25-2003 02:56 AM:

I've hunted with Boone dogs for 10 years and still have never seen anything to get excited about.

Posted by Joe Bone on 06-25-2003 03:05 AM:

What's wrong Boone boys? Scared to talk about facts?

Posted by Joe Bone on 06-25-2003 03:10 AM:

I've hunted with dogs out of old Boone himself. hunted with mike himself at many hunts. Not knocking him but people don't need to try to compare what mike has done compared to what the Master Joe House Has done.

Posted by Justin Smith on 06-25-2003 03:18 AM:

Any studs on the all time producers list deserve some credit..Boone is on there and no doubt Lippers' influence is heavy on the list. Both good strains ...not much to argue about really.

blue coon dogs .. you need to step up your game. The ole Dean and House worshipping only stimulates for so long.

Posted by HOBO on 06-25-2003 03:22 AM:

Don't know how anyone could knock what Mike has done with his line of dogs.He has had the same line for almost 40 years. How many other breeders out there are still breeding the same blood that they had back when they started? The Boone dogs have one thing that is missing in just about ever line or breed for that matter................ BRAINS !

Posted by Rob on 06-25-2003 03:24 AM:

It appears you haven't hunted with the correct ones out of Boone. Actually, I thought one of his premier qualities was the ability to throw daughters that consistantly produced better than themselves. That in itself, is more than most studs can admit. Joe House has done a great deal for the breed and his accomplishments will be acknowledged for a long time to come. If a guy has to pick between the two breeders dogs, I'll go with Mike Dohoney. What did Boone do for the breed? He put a great deal of dogs on the ground that were intelligent enough to not worry about trash problems. I can't say that for some of the others.

Posted by Joe Bone on 06-25-2003 03:31 AM:

If mike was such a great breeder, why would he ever think about buying Lipper? That's not carrying on his line of dogs at all.

Posted by John Carroll on 06-25-2003 04:37 AM:

When I was a youngster, I had a buddy who was a friend of Joe House's, and hunted a lot of his dogs. One thing I will say for the House bred dogs--they were loud, and they had a lot of speed.

The trash deal is the truth though. The ones I hunted with were trashy suckers.

I didn't think they were particularly intelligent dogs.

I'm not knocking Joe House or his line of dogs either.I have just a little bit of Lipper in my MUTTS also.

Posted by Tank/UKC on 06-25-2003 12:23 PM:

Can't knock either one of them.

They both breed what they hunt and hunt what they breed. That is better than what most of us can say.

Both dogs had great impact on the walker breed. Some of it good, some of it bad. Lipper has impacted the breed more by sheer numbers. 6000+ pups and counting. Here are two facts:

1. Without House's Lipper NO NAILOR (#1 all-time reporducer)

2. Without Dohoney's Boone NO SACKETT JR (where would his numbers be if he had lived a full life)

Neither were any better/worse than most stud dogs. If bred to the right females, they reproduced. If bred to the wrong females, no miracles. The difference is that they were advertised by credible breeders and people came.

You know whats funny about this topic? It was all started on a thread about what made Sackett Jr and the dogs behind him so popular. If anyone would have had a problem with people giving Boone the credit for Jr you would have thought the Yadkin River guys would have jumped on it.Not someone who likes the House line of Walkers.

Posted by Daniel on 06-25-2003 02:29 PM:

I have a dog that has Boone in it. He is one of the best dogs that I hunted with. He will tree any type of coon out there. He is one of the best at treeing layup coons.

Sakett Jr.

Yes no doubt this hound did some for the walker breed, whether or not Boone had anything to do with his reproducing ability can be questioned. I will say a lot of them has that Boone colored head. I do know he crosses well on Houses Lipper, and if anyone can't see this then they need to get their wife or girlfriend to help them read a pedigree, and help them look through the CB or the American Cooner for the facts,You will find that Yadkin River was crossed on MR. LIPPER to reproduce winners Such as Nailor a grandson of Lipper through Lock Down Lassie Old Joe House boys is no doubt the Walker Master Breeder

yesterday, I listened to two three year olds argue about which color was better.......blue, or red.

This thread is like deja-vue......

Posted by Walkerfied on 06-25-2003 08:23 PM:

We are not still hashing this Lipper/Boone thing around are we?
I like them both and I have both in most of my dogs and several times in each pedigree because I like line breeding hounds. I like some things about Lipper bred dogs, lots of go and big mouths, and I like most about Boone bred dogs, beautiful hounds that are intelligent coon treeing machines. Mike Dohoney is a good friend of our families and we spend time with him every year as well as Darrell Trammel, Mike's partner. We are not hunting Mikes dogs because he is our friend. We found out what outstanding hounds were by trying his line and wanted to meet the man who was responsible for it. He is an extremely personable person and he makes you feel like you are a friend minutes after talking with him. He is a wealth of Walker knowledge and you will be smarter just by talking to him. He will know something you dont, I can assure you. He has been at this too long not to know something.
To be at this for over 40 years and be as successful as he is, by staying true to what he started with is truly amazing. This goes for all of the guys who have done this. So now that I have given my $25 dollars worth it all boils down to, hunt what pleases you and who cares what anyone else thinks.

How anyone person can ever question what Joe House has done for the Walker breed is beyond me. Compared to anyone. This man has rode the shirt tails of know one. Any person that knows the history of the Walker breed would not do anything but thank Joe House for his contributions and many years he and Dorthy put forth toward such. I could post many, many, pictures, but I don't feel it is really necessary.

Mike.

I don't think anyone was questioning what Joe House has done for the Walker breed. What was being question is Joe Bone saying that Mike Dohoney hasn't done anything to help the breed or that Boone didn't help the breed at all.

I'm just glad to see a good inter-breed arguement not involving us B&T folks...LOL!!!!

Posted by John Carroll on 06-26-2003 06:17 AM:

Yeah, or us Bluetick men, like the Uchtman vs. Dean vs. Haslouer scenario.

The truth is, no one man can take credit for any of the breeds.

I don't think old Banjo started the Finley River bloodline, did he?

Or is Finley River not a major line in the breed?
