How many dogs does it take to tree a coon ?

I looked at the classifieds the same person will have 3 or 4 dogs for sale one day and 3 or 4 different dogs the next.Do they hunt any of these dogs.I hunt one or two at the most.

I've noticed that too. I've even seen people buying some of those dogs then putting them back on here in a couple of days. Then you might see them the next month in the Cooner for sale by a totally different person.

Seems like everyone wants the worlds best coondog and that most are willing to go through 50 in a years time looking instead of investing the time and training a dog that fits what they want. I wouldn't want more then five myself and thats because I have a son, a daughter, and a nephew that hunts not including my neighborhood kids that like to see the dogs run and tree. Only have one at the present though. I'll probabley get a couple pups to fill my kennel back up though.
Oh yeah and this also comes from greedy people selling culls to make a buck instead of doing whats right.

you can get the worlds best at 6 weeks old. most people dont sell real dogs. on the most part, if the dogs were as good as they say they were then the dogs would keep eating out of there food bowl, and wouldnt be sold.. and then on the other hand you might get the worlds worst at 6 weeks old too.Jimmy b said it right, you need to train the dog to be what you want it to be.. It only takes 1 good Redtick to tree a coon. I am fortunate, I have several, more than I can hunt, because I have a long term breeding program and you can't maintain it successfully with just a couple of dogs. I do farm out some of my dogs so they will get hunted and I rarely have a trained dog for sale. What's wrong with being able to afford to keep several good coondogs around to raise pups out of? It sounds like to me, some of you wish you had 1 good coondog.
As for training your own dog, I have trained a good number. But these day, for me, I have the resources to be able to aquire a trained dog if it will fit into my breeding program. I just bought Nite Champion Totally Alsome's Mighty Mouse. Anyone that says folks don't sell real coondogs needs to take a hunt with Mouse. I have bought a number of good of coondogs as anyone is feeding over the years, bar none. I enjoy training dogs but I don't competition hunt. So I buy excellent dogs that already have titles that carry my bloodlines like Mouse does. You won't see her for sale next week on some board or in some magazine. You can book a pup out of her though.

Redtick, Did Mouse have a "for sale" sign on her, or did you approach the owner?

just curious...

I'm still in search of a real good hound. This is my first season of really hunting hard. I have driven to Ohio and to Illinois from Iowa and haven't found one yet. I'm always looking though.

Only one

It takes only one dog but I happen to have 4 dogs here that can tree one by themselves and 5 pups going plus there is only me and my wife hunting so that makes for some of the dogs being left out. As for selling dog I myself have sold some verygood dogs to hunters that I knew whould do something with them any others was put away that wasn`t a coondog. Mike Marcum

I noticed the same thing,

one person sells expensive hounds, often, and claims they are all perfect.

In regards to Mouse, I have very good connections in the coondog world, especially with certain bloodlines. I heard through to coonvine that Mouse may be able to be bought. She was not advertised as being for sale. I bought her before the fellow could change his mind. She will be a very good long term investment and a great addition to my kennels.
Good dogs are hard to find!

current list..

eng...gr nite ch terry..#5...114 permanent reg pups..10 nite ch...1 gr nite ch...5.64% -dual gr ch alsome..#8..371 perm. reg..19 nite ch..5 gr nite ch..4.48% the advantage to al? his littermates. terry? i don't know of his. both hounds are good ones. just a matter of preferance. redtick likes to talk about his. terry doesn't. they are friends and have been trading hounds back and forth for years!! rofl!!

Posted by Redtick on 12-17-2003 07:31 PM:

Terry is my friend, we talk on the phone alot, someytimes, almost daily. But, I am going to keep what I have and he can hunt and breed what he has. There are some differences. I do plan on crossing some of Lightfoot dogs on my Buckshot line as I have done before with good success. And, I have a female pup out of Nite Champion Lakeland's Red Hot Pepper, who was out of Nite Champion Timberstar Buddy and a half sister to Terry's Terry dog. The pup's sire is Dual Grand Champion Bam Bam II who is a grandson of Buddy. The Lightfoot dogs are a good outcross for me but I am linebreeding on the Buddy-Sandy line with my Buddy bred dogs. I might add that Bam Bam II will be on the reproducer's list as soon as we get 100 pups out of him. He has more than enough Nite Champions to make the list already and there is some great pups out of him that will make it. A 9 month old pup out of him got a 1st in his first hunt recently. Bam Bam II's sire had over 10% Grand Nite Champions, just didn't get 100 pups on the ground because Martin never advertised him and didn't have the time to stud him. Bam Bam II is a full brother to Little Bam.

One,

It shouldnt take more than one hound to tree a coon.
If it cant tree a coon by itself, it is not a Coon Dog,
I dont care what the title or papers say, thats the rules.
