Breaking Fighting Dogs
IS THERE ANY WAY TO BREAK AN AGRESSIVE DOG?
I dont think so. You hear a lot of folks on here saying that they can. I have yet to see one single dog that I saw with my own eyes that was mean and then later on saw that same dog and it was not mean. Not one single dog.
Sure , if they can train pitbulls to catch hogs and not kill the other hunting dogs then these sissy hounds can get along too.
Many folks have set ups and training habits that make dogs mean and they don't know it and don't know how to stop it .... hounds are tough enough not to be broke from fighting.
Yes Mister winchester's wonder cure work's every time .

Justin, what training habit is there that makes dogs mean??? Just curious.
Keeping dogs in kennel runs where they run up and down all day barking and can see each other when eating is a start .
Loading a dog into a box where another dog has made it's bed will cause some growling .... pull the dog out and load both together.
Dumping pestering pups with your a grown dog constantly will agitate them .... those pups do alot of pestering before you ever walk into the tree and the older dog can get into a habit of bluffing dogs off him/her after they have had enough and you'll never see it happen or hear it unless you get lucky and catch the older dog in the act.
Those are just a few things for starters.
MEAN DOGS
I HAVE A 14M OLD ABOUT 65/70lb HE IS A HARD TREE DOG. RUNS THE TREE SOME I HAVE HAD ONE LITTLE PROBLEM WITH HIM GROWLING AROUND THE TREE ONE NIGHT I BEAT HIS A$$ AND I'VE HUNTED HIM MANY MORE NIGHTS AND NO PROBLEM UNTIL LAST NIGHT. I HAVE A BUDDY THAT HAS A 6YR OLD 70LB HOUND THAT HAS NEVER FOUGHT AROUND THE TREE BUT HE ALMOST KILLED ANOTHER DOG IN HIS YARD FOR NO REASON. I HAVE HUNTED MY PUP WITH THAT DOG BEFORE AN HAD NO PROBLEM. WE TREED ON A TREE LAST NIGHT ABOUT THE SIZE OF A 5GAL BUCKET,GRANTED NOT MUCH ROOM FOR 4 MALE DOGS. MY PUP TREED FIRST THEN THE REST COME ON THE TREE. WE HEARD A LITTLE MEAN BARK JUST ONE TIME SO WE RUSHED IN. I WAS ABOUT 30 YARDS FROM THE TREE BUT IT WAS THICK I COULDN'T SEE IT GOOD AND I HEARD IT BREAK LOOSE WHEN I GOT THERE MY PUP AN THE 6YR OLD WAS GOING AT IT! SO IS MY PUP ONLY AGRESSIVE WHEN ANOTHER AGRESSIVE DOG IS THERE OR WHAT BECAUSE ITS NEVER HAPPENED! IS MY PUP GOING TO BE A FIGHTER OR CAN I BREAK HIM?
Heres one way to tell. Take him out with a dog that absolutly wont stay treed with a mean dog. A dog that can tree coons but cant take face barking at all. Make sure its a dog you know will tree tight on the tree sitting or better yet a stand on the tree treedog by thereself or with a good natured dog. Send your pup in with that dog. That good natured dog will let you know what that pup really is. That dog will let you know if your pup is starting the problem or just defending hisself. Because the situation you have the pup in now with that other dog is not good. Its also no way to find out anything except that you got a dog fight on your hands. You dont know who started it.
In other words, I could hunt with you a night or two with my female and I could tell you if your dog is part of the problem or just defending hisself from those mean dogs.
" HE ALMOST KILLED ANOTHER DOG IN HIS YARD FOR NO REASON. I HAVE HUNTED MY PUP WITH THAT DOG "
why?????????????????????????????????????????????????

quote:I KNOW SOUNDS CRAZY BUT WE HUNTED NIGHT AFTER NIGHT WITH OTHER DOGS AND MY FEMALE WITH THAT DOG NOTHING EVER HAPPENED SO WE FIGURED SOMETHING WENT DOWN TO MAKE HIM DO THAT TO THE OTHER MALE DOG. I KNOW MY PUP HAS GROWLED AT THE TREE BEFORE BUT HE WAS FALLING ON ANOTHER DOG AND IT WAS KIND OF A MUTUAL THING THEY BOTH KIND OF GOT ILL ABOUT IT BUT IT WAS QUICKLY CORRECTED1 I REALLY BELIEVE HE WAS DEFENDING HIMSELF LAST NIGHT BUT IS THERE ANY WAY TO TEACH HIM TO BACK DOWN AT ANOTHER AGRESSIVE DOG? I HAVE A GOOD DOG THAT I CAN HUNT HIM WITH THAT IS A HARD STAND UP TREE DOG THAT WILL TELL IF HES MEAN. I'VE HUNTED HIM A FEW WEEKS AGO WITH THAT DOG AND NO PROBLEM!

Trying to break a fighting dog is more times than not a losing battle.......Your probably going to get someone elses dog chewed up trying....I would just cut my losses and cull the dog....Fighting hounds also have a tendency to turn on people after awhile...Your just asking for grief!

Take him to a vet and get his teeth cut off top and bottom. This might work sure worked on my dog. Eye teeth to eye teeth all of those small ones and eye teeth, there no good anyways. A dog doesn't use them for eating.
In my own lil world'
NO! NO NO NO NO NO NO! And I wish people would stop TRYING! In my opinion, they break them from getting caught. That's it.....The whole outta sight, outta mind thing.

Falling dog
You mentioned in passing that your dog fell on another one. Is he inclined to jump way up the tree when he trees? That may be the problem. Even though a lot of hard-treeing dogs do it, when several crowd in on a modest-sized tree, a tree-jacking dog will land on top of others, setting off a fight. Even if your dog isn't trying to start it, whatever dog he lands on will complain, and he may respond in kind. That's fine in a pleasure-hunting dog as long as you are careful what other dogs you hunt him with. It is a problem in a competition hunter.

We always like to see things in black and white. "Either a dog is mean or it ain't". Thats not true most of the time.
In the real world there is alot of gray area. A dog that might fight to death over his feed pan might be a perfect citizen at the tree. A dog that will guard a tree might move over and never even growl in the dog box. A dog that will tree with other dogs just fine might be aggressive towards other dogs if they have a coon in a hole or over a dead coon.
Another complication in understanding all this is that some dogs are touchy at certain times than others. I once saw a female get aggravated by a male dog while hunting. When she got treed, the same male came into her tree and she snapped at him and he cowed away. Technically she was mean and should be scratched. Then, take a male out thats recently bred a female and hunt him with a male and a female thats either been in season or is going out. You might see him do something he wouldn't ordinarily do. A dog that is in an all out dog fight at the tree one night might be fine with pups crawling on him 2 nights later.
IMO, thats why the rules are set up the way they are, to give dogs a chance to prove, CONSISTENTLY, that they have a problem getting along with other dogs. If they do this, then they are gone. If they slip up once in awhile, then they will get another chance. Most dogs, in some circumstances, will look "mean" to someone at some point.

Be truthful to yourself
Quit trying to tell yourself my dog is not mean he just don't like ^&&^%, **&^^, ((*^, ((*&&%, NO he is mean dont need a one minut adjustment rule at the tree it just needs a trip to the vet for a night, night, injection. One sure cure for a fighting dog period. We as coon hunters have alowed ruff dog to creep into the breeding pen because we have got SOFT like most AMERICANS have." bash" all you want but a mean dog is still mean.

Mean Dogs
I asked the question while back on the B&T site , if your dog have to fight to stay treed , then what do you want yours to do ? 90% or better says they want 1 to STAY NO MATTER WHAT THE COST IS !!!!!!!!
The problem is most people wants the gold no matter if their dogs gets chewed up . The problem lies within the people that wants these mean dogs.
In hunts now it's not about who has the best coondog that wins but WHO HAS THE MOST STAY POWER !!!!!!!
