Slick Treein'

The thread below concerning Walker Dog Accuracy has brought to mind a novice training question. Can a young dog (say less than two years old) that hunts on his own and trees his own coon, but has a tendency to slick tree more often than not be made more accurate? If so what should be done?

SELL HIM TO ME CHEAP ASAP!!! I LIKE A YOUNG DOG THAT ISN'T AFRAID TO GET TREED AS LONG AS HE STAYS PUT. WITH HARD HUNTING AND A LITTLE ATTITUDE ADJUSTING HERE & THERE HE'L BE WINNING CASTS IN NO TIME. I CAN PUT UP WITH A YOUNG DOG SLICK TREEING RATHER THAN RUNNING FAST GAME HOURS ON END & THEN ENDING UP SITTING UNDER A COON THREE HOURS AFTER I CUT HIM. JMO

Well, that is the situation I have. He is 18 months old and has treed three coons (that I have actually seen) on his own. He has treed several den trees and many trees I haven't found a coon in. Some of the trees could have held a coon but a couple nights ago he definately treed a couple times where there was no coon. Made me start thinking that perhaps more of the other trees I attributed to not being able to find the coon were really slick trees. I am new to this. What should I do?

take him off the tree -10 ft or so cut him again and see if he missed it or is just grabbing them

if you are making alot of dens, he may be running backwards.

I send dogs on from a slick tree & make them find where the coon really is. I've used switches and shock collars to add emphasis on occasion.

My experience has been that some dogs can be fixed & some can't.

Most often, the dogs I've worked on will get more accurate when hunting alone but still grab trees when hunting with other dogs who check/locate trees a lot.

I AGREE WITH THE ABOVE. ONLY IF YOUR SURE THE TREE IS SLICK SCOLD HIM MAYBE EVEN TAKE A SMALL SWITCH AND SWITCH HIM ON THE A$$ BUT DO NOT BEAT HIM OFF A TREE. YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHAT YOUR DOG CAN TAKE BECAUSE YOU CAN MAKE A DOG START LEAVING TREES BY OVER DOING THIS. AFTER THE DOG HAS TAKEN THE TRACK ON AND TREED THE COON KNOCK IT OUT PET HIM UP AND GIVE PRAISE. HOPE THIS HELPS.

Good point.
I saw a coon sitting up this fall and sent a dog in the wrong direction.
He took it back to a den.
I went and got him, scolded him and then led him all the way back to the right tree.
Don't know if this fixed anything but it was worth a shot.

I think a lot of dogs that miss are Trashing on Squirrels.

Posted by sheepster on 12-28-2005 03:35 AM:

Davis, just how many trees has he made and you not seen a coon??? Approximately????

Posted by sheepster on 12-28-2005 03:39 AM:

I will agree that some dogs can be fixed and some cannot. To me, if a dog is simply getting a little overanxious and pulls up a little too soon then they will probably get better eventually. But you whup a dog and send them on from a slick tree over and over and over and over and they usually never tree the coon......... I dont think theres much hope for that kind. Just my opinion.

Posted by Davis on 12-28-2005 01:18 PM:

How many?

He was probably slick treed between 10- 12 times. Several of the times he seemed to run a real hot track and was treeing hard when I got to him so I figured it was my inability to not find the coon.
