Lactating female ration ?

My female had pups on christmas eve. She had 5, one was dead. She has 4 healthy pups. My ? is,,she doesn't seem to be eating her dog food. Should i mix her food with some warm water to make like a mush to see if she will eat it. She has eatin some scraps from a deer that I had laying out in the snow by the barn. She ate that real fast. What should i do with her food? Thanks.

she will not eat very much for a day or two --than put her on two feedings a day or self feeder --works for me real well

My female had pups 2 weeks ago, i feed her 3-4 times a day with canned meat and a better dog food.

I think she will star eating, but more inportant is what you feed her. I like to feed lactating females Purina Puppy Chow.

Puruna Puppy Chow

mixed with water & canned food. They usually don't eat much the first couple of days because they've ingested all the "stuff" from whelping. As was mentioned - it's the QUALITY of the food that counts. I've also, to encourage eating, bought those inexpensive chicken leg quarters and boiled them (flavored with a little garlic powder & salt) until the meat & skin falls off the bone. You can mix the chixken & broth with the puppy chow. If you let the bones simmer for 24 hours they become soft enough to include in the food (per my Vet).

She started eating today. She is on a puppy food. The Prism stuff. I wanted to stay with the same brand that I feed normally so I just switched to the puppy food. Thanks for all the replies.

you people feeding canned dog food are wasting your money at best canned dog food is 80 percent water thats what they call moisture on the label and the highest protein i have seen is 12percent

A Vet told me one time a dog could starve to death on canned dog food. But, I guess if the dog won't eat anything else, its better than nothing.

I generally put a lactating female on a self feeder. But you have to watch them, because I have had females get too fat, even while nursing pups.

Good luck.
