When you go hunting do you prefer more or less hounds im talking about real hunting not competition.

DEPEND'S,

on several different things, like, will I be hunting by myself (1-5 dog's), am I getting a dog ready for Comp. Hunts (1 dog), or how many other guy's I'll be hunting with (1 or 2 dog's), etc. I have hunted quite a few times with 4 & 5 dog's & had my hands full. Two older dog's & 2 or 3 young dog's under a year old. Several nights, I had dog's scattered every direction. It didn't take long, to TEACH THEM TO GET BEHIND & LEAD CORRECTLY, when leading them away from a tree or going back to the truck.

Oh ok thats great I have 6 walkers 1 is about 2 years old and the rest was born in may this year they are gettin big on me I was wondering If i would have better luck taking all six out or just a couple at a time what do you guys think?

i went hunting with 2 pups

and they went hunting with the old dog but then they stayed gone all night playin and fiddlefartin around till sunup. i will only hunt 1 pup at a time but once there mature enough to stop playin and just hunt i will take 2 pups.

everyone does things a little different, but if I were in your situation, I would take them ALL, when hunting by myself, as long as they were not getting each other into very much trouble. As each one starts hunting & trailing a little, put a shock collar on it, & be ready to push the BUTTON a little, if your SURE THAT IT'S TRASHING. But here again, until they got up around 10 months to a year old, I didn't really care if they ran a deer or a coyote, as long as they ran it to catch it. When they start learning the difference between a COON & TRASH, thats when I get serious about BREAKING THEM.

Also, make sure that your older dog can handle the PRESSURE of the young dog's around it, milling at the tree, maybe trashing a little, etc. When I see which pup is doing the things that I like the best, thats when only that pup gets to go with the older dog, by it's self. The other pups will get to go once in awhile, but not with the one that I've separated from the rest already.

Good luck, & with that many YOUNG DOG'S, I know you will have nights, when you will ask yourself, "WHAT HAVE I GOT MYSELF INTO HERE"???????????????

broke dogs i hunt 2 and mostly rotate or turn them in different directions. i only start 1 pup at a time,if i have several the one that shows the most maturity and does the best on the starter training(cage coon,drag etc.) will be 1st. if that one doesnt do anything put him up for a week or so and move to the next.

keep us heartless ----ards posted on how they turn out.. i would bet you are gonna run into the need to cull.with all them in the same pen at that age ,i would probably cull 3 of them right off.the 2 with the most battle scars because they will be dominant and too aggressive and the one without a mark because it will run from the other dogs. but dont despair,you dont have to shoot them yourself, you can always dump them down the chute at the pound and tell yourself they will all find good loving homes where they wont have to walk in crap all the time(couldnt help myself)lol

if you get a couple running and treeing then hunt them together bout 25% and the rest of the time solo

Heres how you find out what kinda dog your feeding. Take dog out by itself with no other dogs whatsoever. Turn dog loose in natural woods with no feeders. Do this a lot and after while you will come to know FOR SURE WITHOUT ONE SINGLE DOUBT what kinda dog your really feeding. Just my opinion.

Mr. Trevis. Thanks for at least partially agreeing with me.
As for the feeder buckets let me tell you. Up until 3 years ago i was a BIG TIME FEEDER BUCKET MAN. I had 5 or 6 out all the time and I kept food in them all the time. I hunted by myself mostly and I thought I had the greatest dog that ever lived up until 3 years ago. I started going hunting with some people that had some REAL COON DOGS that knew how to find a coon. I was taking her out of her comfort zone and hunting her in strange hunting ground. She embarrassed me reguarly. She would go out about 200 - 300 yards usually and then turn around and show back up at our feet while the other dogs were getting struck 1/3 of a mile or a half mile deep or even further. The guys I was hunting with did not have feeders. After a lot of thinking and a lot of embarrassment and some long talks with them I stopped putting food in my feeders. At first I didnt tree many coons for a while. But slowly but surely my dog started ranging out further and further and within a years time she was treeing nearly as many coon as she was before. Now when I take her to strange hunting land with strange dogs she takes off like she was shot out of a cannon and dont look back and gets first strike on a coon track many times. I can take her to strange hunting land all by herself and she may not hunt as fast as she does with other dogs but most of the time she will at least go hunting and find a coon. 3 years ago I could not say that. Now, everybodys experiences may not be like mine. This is just my expereinces. Constant feeder bucket hunting had made my dog lazy and I didnt have any way of knowing that until I took her off them feeder buckets and I found out. Just my opinion.

Sheep, I think the constant feeder bucket hunting made her get used to not having to get out there a ways to find a track. You said that when you took her somewhere else she would run out about 300 yards and come back. You said this was also with other dogs, was she used to hunting wiyh other dogs at the time? Everybody seems to think you need to run a hound alone all the time-you also need to run them with other dogs.

I agree Mike. Your right there. She was not used to hunting with other dogs. She was hunted by herself almost all the time.

just my opinion. Feeders are for helping young dogs to get started and lazy people hunting old dogs. Once a dog is trained you shouldnt need feeders to tree coons. If you do you may want to look for another hound.

feeders

feeders are good for having places to start hot tracks quickly for a young dog. I don't have feeders out as per say but I have a couple farms that I hunt occasionally that have cattle and the farmers have feeders out around barns where they seperate and feed calfs . One of the places is near to my home and it is convenient as a place to always be able to start a coon . It doesn't mean I always get one treed in there as the coons in that area mostly den in the ground and are run so much that as soon as they hear a truck pull in to the place they begin to scatter.
I also hunt places where there are no feeders and the coon are scarce and hunted hard but I usually have as much luck treeing one in those places as anywhere else.
I was out the other night with one of the old timers around here who called and said he wanted to go and we went and hunted in a place that is known to be hunted by many and has been hunted for years and years. There have always been a few coons there because of again,like the other place, there are alot of holes and they go in the ground.
My old dog ran onei n the ground and then went in the opposite direction and after being gone about 20 minutes we moved around a hill and could hear her treed about a half mile down in a little holler . Went in to her and she had a nice boar coon.
Heres what the fellow hunting with me said and this is my point in this post. He said " Jeff ,... it don't matter WHERE you hunt, NEAR as much as WHAT you hunt ,does it !! "
This fellow is 67 years old and him and my father -in-law took me on my first coonhunt somwhere between twenty five and thirty years ago ,so I was proud that my old dog could show his pup a coon .

i dont think coons are thick here in east tn.we have our on little competion hunt around 12-20 people (not license) so we have buckets so we can score as many time as we can.here in these big woods you can tree coons but you probaly only going to get one drop..i went christmas eve and droped in the big woods and tree a coon in like 10 minutes but that dont happen to often,,,,,,,,,steve

It only takes one dog to tree one coon when your a competition hunter.

I always like to here 2 or 3 dogs working a track.
