Hunting in rough weather.

Do you go out if it is rough outside?

I'm not talking a little rain, or a little snow, or a little wind, or a little cold. I'm talking down right nasty outside. You know (or think) that the coon aren't moving. Do you still go out?

Since the coon are thick up here, I personally really enjoy taking a dog out on rough nights to see what they are really made of. There seems to be more satisfaction in bringing home one coon after hours and hours of hunting in rough conditions than bringing home 5-10 of them when they are running everywhere.

My experience's on those type of night, it ends up to be more dog hunting than coon hunting so I stay home.

I like my creature comforts

too much. I'll be in my favorite chair, in front of the boob tube watching CSI, eatting tater chips, with my trusty hound snoozing at my feet waiting for a dropped crumb!

Only if I have to to get the hound and myself ready for a big hunt. We have too few coon down here to make it even closely worth the trouble. I spent a night out with a buddy looking for his dog in the freezing rain and wind. No thanks. I was sure glad my dogs got treed and I got them in the truck before the weather got so nasty.

Hee hee, And I dont stay home with anyones Mama.

Never know-

what your feeding if you only hunt the good nights or days.

I don't hunt if it's below -15 (coyote) or the wind is blowing hard. (Both coon and coyote)

old Timer - I know what I'm feeding, that's why I don't hunt in bad weather but if by mistake, I find myself in bad weather I have some excuses ready, for instance, when my dog trees a den when it's cold outside I can say the coon is denned up instead of he ran it backwards or if it's raining and my dog is wallering, I can say the rain washed off all the scent.

I just tonight asked my wife " do remember back when I was a "coon hunter". She thought a minute and answered; "Yeah vaugely". We then got into the remembering those days when I'd take more time wrapping up for the hunt than the hunt lasted,LOL

In those days we did not have the fancy equiptment of today. and a hunt could last a long time, lost dogs, lost hunters and stubborn dogs and hunters.

In winter months the bottoms of both my feet would get so cold, the skin would loose its elasticity and crack open. Each nite, I'd take super glue and close the cracks, wrap feet with masking tape and put on a thin sock, then a bread wrapper, then a heavy sock before putting boots on.

I have on occasion left home and run into snow drifts that would be high enough to cover the headlights on the pickup.

Once my friend and myself were walking and talking and suddenly discovered that we were walking down the middle of a deep creed, on top of ice. On these nights the dogs treed coon just to spite us and make us walk to them.

Nope, I didn't go tonite was about ready to go and hunting buddy called and backed out. Years ago I'd just gone on alone, but I stayed home, looked out at the moon and convinced myself that TOMORROW nite will be better anyway.

I am not quite as goofy as I was in my early twenties, but I still get a wild hair and go out on some bad nights just to see if the hounds will perform.

I like to measure them in adverse conditions from time to ime.

MS Scoggin-

If they tree on a den this time of the year, no excuse, just back up alittle and look in the snow and see which way the toe nails are pointing in the snow. As far as rain, that may happen on an old feed track so I'll give you that one.

How's everything up there? Tried calling the E man a few times but just got the old machine.

Got a nice big old boar last night, wish I would have taken the camera. Had old Remington and George on the wood lookin good.

Take care and say hi to Mr. E.

Most of my fondest memories are when the weather was less than desirable. One night it was pouring down rain in January. Another night it was so foggy I couldn't see more than about 10 feet. Then there are about a dozen nights that it was so cold you would have never thought it was possible to tree a coon on the outside. Sure at the time, I thought I might be a few shovels from a full load, but now they are wonderful memories that I wouldn't trade for anything.

I will be the first to tell you I do not hunt every night ... heck it's not even close! I will tell you if I get a hankering to go ... I am gone no matter what the weather is.

Old Timer - miss talking with you - didn't know you've tried to call. Did you leave us a message - i'd call you back.

PS - You know what they say about the excuses we make about our dogs!

I go when the weather sucks it's the best way I know to measure the amout of dog power thats on the end of your leash
it can also let you find out real quick how wonderful the young super stud really is .

I have had people drive quite a distance to hunt and the weather turn bad. If they still want to hunt i will take them. But, i do not hunt for the hides and can hunt here pretty much all year, so if it is a terrible night i am smart enough to stay home if i have a choice.

Posted by Englishdog1 on 11-20-2005 06:48 PM:

Sure, I'll go....

Many times if i'm planning on hunting that night, I'll get a call from a buddy to ask if I'm crazy enough to be "out in this $hit". I'll say sure, and they ask to join me. You all are right, you don't know what kind of dog ya got on your leash if you only hunt in good weather. I really like it in Feb., temp about 12 degrees, 2 feet deep of snow, moon shining bright, and a Redtick belly up on the wood with the coon lookin back --- PRICELESS!

Drop"em

I hunt in some pretty bad stuff and I dont have the dog power to be out in it so most of the time I have pretty bad nights out. But I still keep going. I figure the dogs arent going to get in better in the kennals.

I agree with Larry.I don't know why, but my fondest memories of hunting were the most miserable(at the time).I WON'T hunt in a big wind, and have never had the opportunity to hunt in snow, but all the others I've done.To me, the best hunting (for ANYTHING) is done just before a storm or front moves in.

Posted by jimmie legrand on 11-29-2005 08:27 PM:

yep sure will i like huntin on some miserable night but not to many ive gotten smart over time but i figure take the hounds out on some hard miserable night and youll find out what kinda hound your packin sometimes mine mlook good sometimes they look like crap thats the breaks

HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU GONE TO A NITE HUNT AND THE WEATHER TURNED TO $&!1. IF I DON'T HAVE A HOUND THAT WILL HUNT IN ALL WEATHER THAN IT AIN'T GOING TO THE HUNTS. YOU GOTTA HUNT YOUR HOUND IN ALL TYPES OF WEATHER. FROM A GUY THATS BEEN STRUCK BY LIGHTING (AND THAT'S WAS NOT DURING HUNTING) I HAVE ALSO HUNTED DURING THUNDER STORMS.

It seems like to me that a dog will either hunt in a storm or he wont. Some just wont hunt in it no matter what, some will never look back.
