My Skuna River Preacher is whitey bred on

his mothers side and he is a very easy handling dog and doesn't have a mean hair on him and he is a coondog and a tree dog, just kills me that I have him sold this coming Friday and The little female I bought to breed to him. Friday night might be the last time I get to hunt him, I kind of hope he looks like a idiot so the guy won't buy him, I've kind of got attached to him and I have had him since he was a pup.

What are the strenths of line bred whitey dogs? Are they open trailers?

Posted by warrior on 10-26-2005 12:45 AM:

YES

Got a double grand daughter to Whitey here. You can strike her when she opens and she will do her dead level best to put an end on it. If she has faults it is that she is way to independant. She has been pulled from the hunts as she is not a comp dog. Heck I refuse to hunt her with others due to that independant streak. With others she will leave at a dead run in an effort to leave the others eating her dust. When she does open she might be a mile or more away. Me too dogs just gave her fits in the hunts causing her to run even deeper. A hunt ain't fun if the dog runs past the coon that is close just to get one by herself.
By herself now she is as close to perfect as I have ever seen. Take the pressure of others off of her and she will tree them right off the chain. Seriously she has opened on the leash and was treed three minutes from unhooking.
As to how open, no babble in her at all. She will open according to the track like a good dog should. I can tell within a few minutes whether she is on an old feeder track or whether I should head on in to her because it's going up soon. Oh and when she trees load the gun as she is as she is the most accurate I have ever fooled with. She checks the tree good before committing blowing up rather than locating. Many will not like that as they want a dog that locates quick and rolls it over right or wrong. I want right and can live with a hound that checks.

As a line, yes they are "open" trailers. Some more than others, some less, but one of the strenghts of this line of dogs is its ability to work a track, heads up, on the run, type trailing.

They are also known to be hard tireless hunters that have a lot of drive, desire, and heart. Not necessarily "stylish" tree dogs blowing the top out of a tree at 140 barks per minute, but they are known to be ACCURATE TREE DOGS that will be there whenenver you get there....if you want to run, or go to town and get a cup of coffee....they will be there when you get there.

Better than average HOUND mouths...never seen one that sounded like a cur dog. Most lean towards a long bawl locate and a shorter bawl/chop on the tree. I have seen several that NEVER chop.....but like anything else you have to take the bottom side of every pedigree into consideration.

Most of this line of dogs are very personable. They like people and seem to work to please. Known also for a stubborn streak, they are not the kind that you simply call in at the end of the evening.....

Thankyou, Warrior and Oakridge. What seems to cross best with the whitey bred dogs, if you were to outcross.

The picture above is of Stylish Clover himself. If it were not for his white coloration (with a half white face) and standing at stud at the same time as Sackett Jr.....who was producing tan headed, blanket backed pups....I would venture to say that Clover would have gone down as one of the greatest reproducers of all time.

Clover crosses back well on itself. They carry with them brains, hunt, and tracking ability. I would say that history has proven that Clover crosses well on Sackett Jr. and the Skuna River bloodlines. I have seen some very successful Finley River (which in reality is Clover breeding) x Clover crosses as well.

If you have a dog that may have a little too much tree, and not enough track, or not enough mouth.....give one of the good Clover bred studs a try.

i would venture to say that Clover was the better reproducer because he produced traits in dogs that i look to find though for me its hard to find because there is not many clover dogs around here alot of skuna river and sackett jr dogs around here i also hunt the skuna river line of dogs a good amount they also carry what i like in a dog

AMEN to that brother Joe. Dixie is an easygoing hound that just seems to love getting attention from folks. As for the stubborn streak I prefer to say that they have their own set of rules to go by. She knows them and expects me to understand. LOL She is a rule unto herself. I will unashamedly say that I have taught her nothing but that she has taught me everything.

Hip Hop

Joe is more up on what crosses well as I am not a breeder but merely an observer of what I like in a hound. Skuna River crosses real well on Clover. As one said these lines both have some good ones and similar traits, though I tend to like the Whitey blood better (better no make that more of a bawl mouth, nose and drive). Skuna river dogs would be my hands down second choice (as long as Queen V and Homers Gomer were in there close). All this is just from personal observation (no experience with other lines).
We have an eight month old female here that is bred very similar to Fred (Homers Gomer on top and Whitey Girl on bottom). This pup is one of the most natural hounds I have seen. First coon she ever saw she tracked and treed it like she had been doing it all her life. She has gone with the older dogs and again looked like an old pro.

Joe I didn't mean that whitey didn't have finely river blood running threw him..Your post kinda made it sound like whitey was where the finely river stuff came from.

hey joe! i have tims old dog softwood patch over here and boy she can get in that country and tree a real live ricky like a dog should! and we have had some good success breeding clover females to my ole magnum dog that is buck creek bred! i was talking to a guy that lives up near terry scheer and terry has a 7 month old pup out of magnum and a clover x finley river female by the name of silk and i guess that pup is the real deal according to the man i talked to. we bred old patch to magnum and i have a male pup over here that looks exactly like old clover. doug jackson was over here hunting with chuck dunlap and he sure was eye balling him.lol the pup sure does have a mouth on him. doug has a litter mate to terrys pup and he also is doing a good job or thats what i am hearing. and there is a sister to the two of them an pa that they are hunting and has been treeing coons on her own like a 6 year old since she was 5 1/2 months old.

I hunt with dogs every other weekend that are the Sackett Jr(direct son)Clover(granddaughter) cross. Very accurate hard STAY PUT TREE DOGS. They can get treed quick as any and hunt hard.Very nice dogs that I think any Coon hunter would enjoy owning. I now have a pup out of a similar cross as mentioned above very outgoing and loud to boot. Out of a direct son of Sackett JR and a Direct Daughter Of Clover. Here is her pic and pedigree.

Brian,

I have a littermate sister to Patch. Deep, Lonely, Loud, and accurate pretty much sum up her strong points....did I mention Loud?

As a breeder, I am trying to line breed on the Stylish Clover and Logan's Wild Clover dogs. I am doing that to have dogs that will allow me to breed well into the future and cross over on different lines without doubling up on traits that I don't find desirable.

Ugly is as ugly does.

The way I see it....I turn them loose in the dark. The reality is that I can't hardly sell a blanket backed pup. And when it is all said and done....they look good with all 8 nipples plastered to a tree where there is a real live coon!

Pretty has NEVER EVER, NOT ONE TIME, treed a coon.

Ability over asthetics....

Please notice that every one of these dogs is BY THEMSELVES....no gang hunting...me tooing dogs in this bunch. All are direct decendants of Stylish Clover, all are titled dogs that are pleasure hunted.......and tree real live coon....not trees.
