Puppy Mill??

Just wanted to know what everyone one would consider a puppy mill. I know of people who raise coonhounds that will raise that one litter that they have been waiting for and then their are people that every time you turn around they have pups for sale. Let me know your opinion. Thanks alot.......

I dont call any dog breeder a puppy mill. I feel you could raise 10 litters a year and not be a puppy mill. You could raise only 3 litters and I might call you a puppy mill if pups and dogs are kept in cages or little kennels. I believe its in the way you raise them not the numbers you raise.

How would you describe this?

This is a registered and inspected (or so they claim) AKC kennel just up river from me. They breed Chiahuas (sp?), Maltese and Peekapoos. I have been in their yard and spoken with the couples that run the place. They have aproximately 20 chiahuas about 12 maltese and I don't know how many peekapoos. They may have even more than that as I know I didn't see all and I have noticed that they have added at least three 10x10 runs since I was there. They also have facilities I have not seen where they used to fool with G. Shepherds. They still have three of those that I have seen. All of these dogs are in outside runs with portable storage buildings backed up to the runs for shelter.
This couple has permanant fliers posted at all the local stores advertising pups as well as running ads continually in the local papers. Pups starting at $300. They claim to specialize in white chiahuas (it is my understanding that this color is linked to genetic faults) and particularly small size. I would call this nothing but a puppy mill. Breeders continually spitting out pups for profit.
Conditions are not my measure of a puppy mill. If you are not breeding to improve a breed then you don't need to breed.

i believe,

unless mis-read, that by conditions you are referring to, you mean squaller! i am referring to "dedicated" breeders, that set goals and raise their own line. this can take alot of work, time and money. and naturally, non-future stock, is sold. that may make someone appear as a "puppy mill". just all depends upon an individual perspective of another's efforts for the market..profit or not.

If your goal is to generate income then that is a puppy mill. I dont think you would have much success running a puppy mill for coonhounds, most of the time you can't give them away.

Laura that is what I'm talking about.

What are you dedicated to as a breeder? Money just for spitting out lap dogs that will serve no purpose and in most cases are out of inferior quality individuals whose only qualification is cuteness and popularity of the breed. Not just lap dogs either All Grand can very easily be another form of this madness.
I am not against profit per se. If one can consistantly choose superior individuals for breeding stock and cull hard and are able to sell the results for profit then no you are not a puppy mill. To me it is not a question of quantity or profit (though that is far to often the only consideration) it is ones goals. To be producing puppies just for the sake of producing puppies is wrong.

laura

I raised trained and handled banjo in all of his wins except for the 99 ukc world. i was still the owner then and i did everything up to that point but handle him. every other win was put on him by me. I did not anywhere state that i currently own him. I was the one who decide to sell him. Hope this clears up you confusion.

The confusion may be because of your signature.

It reads you are the owner:

Owner- Trainer- Handler- 1998 NkC. 1999 UKC World Champion Cherry Creek Banjo Rick

A puppy mill in the coonhound world is the guy that has 15 females and breeds them every time there in heat to the stud that throws the highest dollar pups at the time. There is a alot of those out there right now even if noone wants to admit it.

I agree 100% Jacob.
