Walking lights VS Headlamps....
When you hunt do you prefer to use a headlamp to walk by or do you use the walking light that is almost standard on new lights?
We build our own lights and are thinking about adding walking lights to our battery packs. What are the pro's and con's with the walking light?

i really liked having a walking light on my cajun. now that i have the coonbuster, i don't have one but i wish i did! i would a lot rather use a walking light than a headlamp. i'm sure it would be a good idea to put them on your lights.

I know it will keep bugs out of my face. A walking light cant burn very much juice compared to running the low side of a headlamp. So it seems you would be saving battery power also. I am looking at putting an LED setup in because they are so much brighter than a standard bulb.

that is true also... an led light probably only uses half the power of a regular light bulb also. i would imagine you would have to put 3 or 4 of them on it.

Every light I've ever had has had a walking light and I'd hate to be without one. It saves juice on the battery, keeps bugs out of the face, and makes it a little easier to keep a low profile if you know what I mean, lol. It will also get you out of the woods if you have headlamp problems.
I use the walking light first and the headlamp only when really needed.
Walkerfied here is something for you to check out

Thanks Rob. There is some pretty good information on that site. I am gonna play around with it and see what I can get to work. I appreciate all the feed back.

only problem i have
is on my bright eyes light is the walking light has a full white lens and it kinda shines in your eyes which makes it hard to see. I've seen some with the clear lens on the bottom, works alot better having the top of the walking light shielded.

I use the walking light on my cajun. Keeps the bugs away and gives plenty of light without running the battery down.
I like the walkin lite due to whin I am judge in a cast I can work on the score card when dogs are near and it doesn't bother nothing
And you all are rite the bugs do bother you less with the walkin lite.

Were you at English Days in Michigan this year? You might have been the guy I talked to in the vendor barm about LEDS.
We use LEDS at work because they draw so little juice and have more than 10 times the life of standard electroilluminescent bulb.
The trouble with LEDS is you don't get the distance or "spot" out of them. The handlights they talked about use multiple LEDS then the cost is high. The bulbs used on the walking lights I assume are not LEDS. Mine has a little amber screw on cover and I have never looked to see what kind of bulb it is, I assumed it is a white bulb, not an LED.
My goal was to try to find an LED bright enough to use in a mining head, but as I found out LEDS just can't get distance out of them so useless in shining a tree. We also found out that a round top LED is brighter than a flat top, so I had Marl Manufacturing make me up some round top LEDS as we use them in Fiber Optics applications in dark rooms. We use green and amber LEDS for our film. The LEDS we use are bayonet base. They are 24vdc but can be illuminated with a 6, 10, or 12 volt battery up to the 24 volt, just that the lower volt batteries you don't get the brightnes out of them. Ihave an experimental white round top 24vdc LED here right now that is pretty bright I want to send you one to try, no cost, just as a favor, let me know if you can use it as a walking light on the side of battery. If you can I will gurantee it has very little draw on a battery and should last 10 years or better, even with high use. Send me your address I'll mail you a couple. If they work I'll give you the vendor name. address and cost! Be glad to help ya out!

I appreciate it!!! It was not me you spoke with in Michigan this year but apparently we are again on the same page. I have been tossing this around for some time about the LED's. The pop cover topic got me thinking about it yesterday because to find coon and keep bugs out of your face is the reason I use them. The walking light would eliminate the bugs in the face. On top of that there is less draw on your batteries which means LONGER BURN TIMES!!! Anything to get more performance out of my light is gonna make me happy. I will send you my addy in a pm after I post this and would love to try the LED as a walking light. I will keep you posted on how they do and will even try to get a video of it a night so you can see for yourself. Again I appreciate all the help from you guys.

Just for the heck of it, on my lunch hour I took one of these white round top LEDS, hooked it up to a small battery powered box we use, powered by a 9 volt Alkaline battery and took it into a test room, and I feel it more than is enough for a walking light. Unlike the standard bulbs, you can look into an LED and not get blinded, so it would be enough to see and walk with but not bother someones eyes. I'll send a couple right out to you as soon as I get your address. Good luck!

Lights
I prefer a walking light - the other just isn't practical when trudging through the woods - too many bugs in the face and the light's not really shining in the right places for walking - also I found the light on my cap tended to put me off balance because I had to hold my head at an unnatural angle to see where I was going.
I have a walking light that I can also use to shine the tree & it's much handier.
