-- training question (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=67928)

I never really drag but at about 4 months I do show them a live coon and do this a couple of times until I can get them really fired up, then I usually take them with the older dogs at about six months.
Good Luck

People accuse me of being color blind. The truth is I will hunt red ones, blue ones, black and white ones, yellow ones, black and tan ones, or even brindle ones; Just as long as they are English!

10 months, if they are not interested wait a month and try again. If they like it I'll show them another one in about two weeks. I never use a drag, only a caged coon. I make them tree it by scent by hiding up in a platform I built. When they can tree consistanly by scent I turn the coon loose and let them tree it. Then I put them on a hot feeder bucket track, once they tree one off the bucket they are through with them unless they need some futher training.
I breed for track so I try to get them to tree before I take them on a hunt, some lines if you train them like this will start slick treeing pretty bad. If they start the way I described then I hunt them alone. If they dont tree there own coon fairly young they are not good enough to breed. Not enough natural ability for me. They also have to have an above average mouth, require little trash breaking, and open on track.
10 months is not too late to start a dog, some may be ready younger but most all are ready by this age.
What you need to be teaching your dog to do now is to come everytime you call it, and what "NO". means so you can correct the pup when it messes up.
teach it to lead and load also.
