What the heck is a Jagdterrier??

I just got my first issue of American Cooner and saw an ad for a Jagdterrier. My question is....What is it?

Like a Jack Russell but black ....more determined hunter and usually tougher. Many of the same uses as an Airedale except for treeing.

I think I might have seen one of those jag dogs go before. It was black all over with tan legs. Usually heard boo hooing all over the woods. You never were very sure what kind of game you were going to find in front of it. Better keep some tomato juice handy!

I once watched a guy enter his Jagdterrier in a treeing contest, although I have no idea why since he had to know the dog would'nt tree. They dropped the coon down and the terrier smelled it a little and they hoisted the coon up and the terrier turned and started smelling for a place to pee, which he found at the base of the tree. I've heard people say they were tree dogs but that was the only time I every laid eyes on one and I'm sure there are some good ones out there.
His looked wire haired kind of grey and black and was about 35 to 40 pounds.

Oh, I am very glad I wasn't there. I've been too close for comfort to the business end of those things in the past. Fortunately for me, I kept pulling the trigger. Did you at least kill it???

Nope...

Didn't kill it, about all I could do to get the pup and get the heck out of there. It darn near killed me though. The funny thing is it did not seem to bother the dogs at all, man did they stink.

I don't think my female will ever run them again though...she knows now that skunk smell means PAIN. I whooped her good when i quit gagging.

A german jagdterrier are bay/hole dogs.....they use them on groundhogs, fox, badger, etc......but they are also very successful gritty hogdogs...an some ppl up in montana use them successfully on big game, bear, cat, they are super tough, on eof the grittiest and most aggressive dog breeds I have seen, I have owned several, and have one right now.....if u want to know more, check out www.knitehunt.com ...they are very good dogs, and some will tree.......although quite aggressive.....

they are like some hounds i have hunted with they have a head on both ends they are gritted little sucker no back up in them -- and 80 lbs hound can't kill a 12 lb coon

What is a Jagdterrier?

They are Jack Russells someone spray painted black, attached the best hound nose, gave them a long leg with enough stride-heart-lung to keep up and even pass by hounds on a track and then some Nazi creator of the breed bred into them the genetic equivalent of a double dose of methamphetamines and steriods.

Not for everyone and not for pet-only homes. Way too much prey drive. And most likely too much dog for most hunters. But they have to be the most exciting dogs to watch work. Most of our American lines do not have the prey drive of European lines and its just as well. Trial champions from Europe are all catch and kill, not much else. Had one from Moscow. I like the line I have now, which are only about 25% recent European blood.

i havea friend that Hunts the Jags on Wild Hawgs. he has a bay vest for one and a cut vest for the other.. tough critters they are. on thinks its catch dog thus the cut vest..... they can get in and out of tuff brush other dogs wont go thru.............

I heard about some guys who had yote problems towards their hounds that started running a Jadgterrier with their hounds. They said the hounds would tree and the terrier would runn in circles around them, then when the yotes came in to attack the hounds, the terrier would run the yotes off. Also heard of guys using pitbulls the same way. Never actually seen it though. Maybe those guys were full of it and feeding me a line?!!

i have a

jagd and i'll tell you what shes as much of a coon dog as any hound ive owned she hunts hard opens on track and drives it
to the tree and hits it with about 120+ bpm
she cold trails pretty well and is 100% independent...
she catches alot of coons on the ground to. 30 pound coons are just a snack for my little penny one chomp on the head and the coon is toast...... i have to have a tracking collar on her cause she isnt stopping till she gets treed. If its a den i just lift her up through her in there you here some nasty sounds then pretty soon ol penny comes out draging mr coon out by his ears.....

Does anyone on here use them on coyotes and how do they hunt them with this dog?

Pound for pound a jagterrier is the toughest dog around. Twice the dog. If you've seen one that doesn't run or tree you've seen a bad one. keeping the coyotes off now thats a good idea as they are getting bad around here.

Jagd terriers are dogs with the bigest heart of all dogs!
They know no fear, and they attack much bigger and stronger animals then themselves.When they hunt in pair they are eaven more dangerous hunters.

I have had a lot of different breeds of dogs over the years, if you could take some of the aggression out of them, they would be the perfect dog...

A jagd Terrier is bred to be a versatile terrier in Germany. They must go through strenuos tests before they are even allowed to breed. This test is called a ZP test or Basic instinct Test. A Jagd must show love of water because they are used for retrieving from water to hand. In that same test they are tested as either open on scent or open on sight and are also tested on their tracking skills, This is done on a brown hare.

In this same test they must also navigate an artificial tunnel with blind exits and with off branching tunnels. The tunnels inside dimensions are 7inches wide and 7 7/8 inches tall with squeeze downs and incline -declines. When they approach the den they must bark consistantly at the gate for 2 minutes and then the gate is lifted and they are expected to not only make contact but hold for so long. This test is either done with a european badger or fox.

In this same test there is also conformation testing where they check for faults and height and weight. The height is to be between 13 and 16 inches at the withers and the dog must be of proportional weight to be able to navigate the tunnel .

In this same test the dog is also tested for gunshyness. Any negative reaction towards gunshot is an automatic fail. Theres a small group of people here in the US that have actually started doing this formal test. Now in Europe if your dog scores well you can also enter it in a versatility test. For those of you who are familiar with the Drathars the test mimics theirs but with the addition of the tunnel test.

. I'm sure you have all ran across breeders who breed any thing and everything of any breed and most of what they put out is pure junk. Theres alot of this going on in the US as the jagd terrier grows in popularity.

Another thing is the jagd terrier has never been bred to be a tree dog although a few will and do a good job of it. So always beware of the breeder with claims of great natural treeing ability. Most of the time it has been trained into the dog.
