At what age would you introduce...

a caged coon if the pup is not shy? I have a 4 month old female, just bought her Sunday. She is pretty bold. Just wondering other opinions. Also would it be too much for her to have the coon right out of her reach on the chain and having an older hound bay at it. The hound I have in mind has no rough stuff in him at all.

Thanks, Scott

Go ahead and show it to her.Just dont force it on her,and if she barks at it great, then dont over do it and burn her out.If she doest,oh well, and try again in a few weeks.

SCOTT S.

I GOT 5 PUPS HERE THAT ARE JUST OVER 4 MONTHS OLD. OUT OF THE 5 THERE IS 1 DOESNT SHOW ANY INTEREST, 1 THAT IS SO SO, AND THE OTHER 3 ARE COON CRAZY. HAVE TAKEN 3 TO THE WOODS WITH THE OLDER DOGS. 1ST JUST STOOD AROUND, 2ND WENT OUT FIRST DUMP AND ENDED UP FINDIN HIM RUNNIN RABBITS A HALF MILE AWAY THEN ON 2ND DUMP OLD DOGS GOT TREED AND HE WENT WITH US TO THE TREE AND SHOT COON OUT AND HE DOVE RIGHTIN AND WHEN I HUNG COON BACK IN TREE HE WENT RIGHT TO TREEIN IT, 3RD PUP WENT OUT WITH OLD DOGS AND WAS WITH THEM WHEN THEY TREED HE ONLY BARKED 2 TIMES AND WAS AROUND TREE WHEN WE GOT THERE. NOT TREEIN OR NOTHIN JUST WOULD STAND UP ON TREE THEN SNIFF AROUND. AFTER SHOT THAT COON OUT HE DID THE SAME AS PUP 2. SO EVEN IN THE SAME LITTER ALL PUPS ARE DIFFERENT AND PROGRESS AT A DIFFERENT LEVEL. I PERSONALLY LIKE EM OUT IN THE WOODS AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE. BUT I KNOW SOME LINES OF DOGS THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PUP AND ALWAYS REMEMBER TO NEVER FORCE ANYTHING ON IT AND TRY TO MAKE IT DO ANYTHING IT DONT WANT TO.
ALL 3 OF THE PUPS I HAVE TAKEN TO THE WOODS WILL RUN A SCENT DRAG AND TREE ON SCENT, JUST NOT QUITE READY TO RUN A WILD COON AFTER DOG YET BUT IT WONT BE LONG.

Dan

I took her to the woods yesterday in the day light. I am going to start her on drags today. After she does that for a while I will introduce the caged coon to her.

IT IS GOOD TO TAKE THEM FOR WALKS IN THE WOODS TO HELP GET THEM USED TO THE SIGHTS AND SMELLS OF THE WILD SO IT IS NOT A HUGE SHOCK TO THEM. IT IS ALSO A GOOD IDEA TO TAKE THE PUP SOMEWHERE SO THEY CAN LEARN TO SWIM AND SO THERE NOT AFRAID OF CROSSIN CREEKS AND WATER. USUALLY IT IS EASIER TO GET A PUP USED TO THE WATER RATHER THAN WAIT AND HAVE TO TRY AND GET AN OLDER DOG TO LEARN TO CROSS WATER. IT WILL SAVE YOU ON THE NIGHTS OUT HUNTIN AND HERE HER START TREEIN AND YOU WALK INTO HER AND THERE SHE IS STANDIN OVER A CREEK AFRAID TO CROSS IT. GOOD LUCK

When mine are chaseing all the cats out of the barn and treeing them , that's when I show them a coon.

I've had them look at coons as early as 3 months.
Others have been 7 or 8 months before they can take it.
One thing I learned, don't lead the pup up to the cage, drag the cage away from the pup.

Here is a 13 week old pup seeing its first coon.

Dan,

I took her to the creek yesterday. We crossed at a place that was pretty simple, she did not want to cross at first. She thought about it for a minute and crossed.

I let the pup decide when the time is right. Monday , I was working my 7 mo old pup on caged coon. Will tree scent drag and put wood on her paws and bark on hanging coon.
I have 2 gyps that are 3 months old , they were kicking a fuss in the pen while the older was working the rolling cage, so I turned them out and bam they went crazy over the rolling cage coon, barking and growling, niping at the coon, never showed any fear what so ever. They have worked a scent drag since they was 10 weeks old.

We killed an old boar coon the other night and I took the tail just to see what my 11 week old pup would do. She followed the drag I made and treed it right were I hung it from a branch. Other pup followed drag but wasn't too interested at the moment in treeing. Here she is. Good looking little thing too, out of Bullet 2.
