If there's a Catalpa tree anywhere near you, get you some Catalpa worms. Them or Danny Kings punch bait are about as close to a sure bet for summertime channels as you can get...

My cats are channels and they do not grow as big as flatheads, but I catch a lot of nice channels. These videos just show a few of the many I have caught this year.

what are you guys catching your big cats on , havent got a chance to get out and catfish yet took kids bluegill fishing and caught several small ones on red worms . for small catfish i always liked using shinners or shrimp and night crawler combo , for the big daddies i like bluegill about size of your hand , goldfish , or a 5 to 8 inch creek chub , or a creek sucker . i also really like shark fishing at the beach reminds me alot of catfishing , we go out and catch anything we can during the day and hit the pier at night and cut up all our days catch in big chunks and put on a 200lb mustad steel liter with 80 lb spider wire mono line , now thats fun ! we can usually get some 4 and 5 footers in but sometimes we get broke off and sometimes we get stuff on we cant handle and get broke off right away !!!

We almost always use perch or bluegill the bigger the better on big fish. If you want to catch alot of channal cats use perch 3 to 4 in long and you will catch more numbers and ocassionaly a big one. Good rule of thumb flatheads are a predator fish and almost always only hit on live bait.

i have always heard that bullheads/mudcats were the best for flatheaden but never tried them but we also use perch, bluegill, goldfish, and carp. we like all these baits about as big as your hand or bigger a flathead has such a wide mouth that a 2lb has no problem eating a bait that big and not to mention when useing big baits like that you know its going to be a nice fish and channel will hardly hit baits that large

ive caught small channels and some bigger blue cats on just plain cut bait or cut blue gill heads , i buy the packs of dead shad at walmart sometimes and use em on a double 2 hook rig on bottom like in a pond if iam bottom fishing they work pretty good on 5 lb and smaller channels , but i like using a slip catfish float with live bait , or river fishing on bottom with live bait for big boys

Are you sure the 41# channel was not actually a blue cat? That would be a record channel. Around here when someone catches a big blue colored channel, they call it a blue cat. And, folks often call blue cats channels. They look very similar but there is a difference.

I have used goldfish to catch flatheads. I like ground leaches for channel cats. I often get out my seine and seine small creeks in the area I am going to fish. Whatever I catch in the seine is what I use for bait. That will be what they are feeding on naturally.
