Showing a Ticked up Walker?

I recently kept a pup out of my breeding that is very ticky. She looks like a Tri Colored English.

She is great built, and is out of my lines that have been DNA for at least 4 generations, not to mention I owned/hunted quite a few of them. They all have ticking, but she has a LOT. It doesn't bother me. I don't care if its a "throwback" to a bluetick/english in the woodpile.

What is everyone's opinion on showing a dog with a lot of ticking? The standard says Tri Colored, white with Spots? Is ticking considered "spots"?

your pup is fine....

local , her ticking isn't enough to even worry on. LOL! you'll do just fine. pretty pup. i showed a ticked walker at autumn oaks, years back. she made the cut and came close to winning ch walker female. she was 3rd show dog that year as well, for their lee crawford events! she also won walker puppy at winter classic. so just depends on how the bsj feels and how close the odds are with another walker. wish you the best, and good luck at events.

That pup on the right is going to look pretty cool when he's fully grown. Always liked those oddly colored walker dogs.

Before the walker and bluetick were registered as such, they were simply known as english. At the request of many breeders the treeing walker was reg. as a seperate breed in the 40's,blueticks were also. Your pup is simply throwback genetics that will crop up now and again, just like buckskin/saddleback plotts, black saddle on a redbone,hi-tan b&t's,etc. It is a nice lookin pup,as are the other 2,congrats and good luck with them

Update - She's matured nicely. I am planning on putting her in her first Bench Show in 2 weeks. Haven't worked her a bit, LOL, but I still have 2 weeks She doesn't hunt too much like a bluedog. She's a little slower to mature than her brothers though.

Here she is at 8 months old (she's now 10 months old)

Here she is at 12 months old. I've shown her twice, she hasn't made it out of the classes. She's had far poorer quality bitches put up over her. She is a little wiggly and bored on the bench still (my fault) I think I will let her mature more, and bring her back out and try showing her again next year.

On a side note she's matured a ton in the woods what little I've had her out. She is super fast, extremely tough, and a very track minded dog, with a ton of drive, impressive winding ability and seems to have a real good nose on her. At first she was doing a little "puppy barking" mostly mouthy chopping on track, but she's starting to get some independence and has changed over into a huge screaming squall mouth on track. She's not really treeing yet, but is always there. Never seen drags or trainers, all natural.

This is her pedigree - it may shed a little insight on where the ticking comes from? I am familiar with all the "Ross's" dogs on the bottom side. They had a little ticking, nothing like this though. They were mostly open spotted wide blazed dark red headed dogs.

Breed standard says nothing about ticks. However I feel most judges wouldnt pick a ticked up dog over one with clean lines and bright white..

Jon you are correct about the standard not mentioning ticking however it's a matter of interpretation of the standard.

COLOR

Tri-colored (white-black-tan) is preferred. White may be the predominant color, with black spots and tan trim; or black may be the predominant color with white markings and tan trim, such as saddle back, or blanket back. White with tan spots, or white with black spots is acceptable. Any other color combination is to be penalized in the show ring.

Black spots are NOT ticks nor are tan ticks spots. I consider heavy ticking on a Walker to be a fault.

well, first off. its hard to critique a dog in photos. and with only one angle. if this were the angle I were judging it at, color would not be the issue. my issue would be the top line and the feet. not knowing what the competition looked like and going on this photo alone, I would not be able to pick this dog either.

Solid, compact and well padded, with a cat-like appearance. Toes are well arched with strong nails.

I took the other pics and rotated them. the feet looked better in them, however, in the one where it looked like you were practicing, she was falling down in the top line, and back feet/legs were not pulled back far enough. in the show pic, you had her set too wide (like a bull dog). keep the legs up under the body. its hard to tell from the angle of the pic, but it looks like the back legs are back far enough, just too wide. again, her top line is swaying. the topline should taper slightly from the withers (shoulders) to the rear. right now you are letting her sway in the middle.

those are the things that I see could be why you haven't made it out of the class, not her color. work on her feet/leg placement, strengthing the topline, getting it up, getting her up on her toes, not sure about gait as we cannot see that from a picture.

good luck.
