car sick dog
My pup is almost 6 months old i got her at almost 14weeks . on the ride home from picking her up she howled and puked a few times . I kinda expected that but she is still getting carsick ! even on short trips she does. She hates the car and truck . She was kept in a kennel and was not exposed to a lot of car trips I guess. is this very common for Coon Hounds ? I have to pick her up and put her in the truck, she wont just jump in like my Birddog.
Any suggestions as i of course will need to drive to where i will want to hunt . also she seems to be afraid of motorcycles (Which i do use for hunting and fishing ) my other dog loves to follow me but she goes the other direction! I have never frightened her or chased her with the bike. any suggestion on her . Perhaps she is a Ludite and is not willing to accept technology LOL.
My Black and Tan got car sick till she was almost a year old. Even now, at two , she just tolerates short rides.
The vet told me to give her a benadryl (regular human one) about a half hour before a ride and that did seem to help.
car sickness:
We have a dog with that very problem he is 11 months and still get sick some times. If you know when you are going to hunt you could not feed until after you get back from hunting. or you could give one tablet of motion sickness pills sold at your local cvs of Walgreens. ask the pharmsist about drimine I think that is have you pronounce that. give it an hour before you load into the truck. It should help if not the old she gets the less she will puke.
motion sickness....
This works for me
Pups...1 Childrens chewable Dramamine pill a minimum of 30 minutes before trip.
No feed 8 to 10 hours before trip.
Put dog in box with tailgate up so they can't see surroundings, many claim that seeing surroundings pass by causes motion sickness.
Dogs 6 mos and older - 1 Adult Dramimine pill, pop down throat a minimum of 30 minutes before trip. Same as above. Only have had one that didn't outgrow iy. Make sure they have good ventilation. Good luck.

does the dramamine make them drousy or anything??
chill out-
she'll get over it with a few gentle training rides. Take her for rides to town or whatever to get her acclimated.
If she doen't get over the carsickness by a year, try half a tablet of dramamine and no food or water within 3-4 hours of a trip.
coon dawg
No the Dramamine doesn't make them drowsy. I always figured young dogs would get over the initial drooling and motion sickness after a few trips. I never give Dramamine when I am going hunting as most of my areas are within 10 to 20 minutes. I only have one dog that gets to drooling real bad and I only give it to her when I go show her on bench and I have a 2 or 3 hr drive.
A young lady from Michigan told me about giving it to pups when I was headed off to English Days one year with a bunch of pups to sell. I dreaded driving the 7 hrs and having puppy puke all over my pups to clean when I arrived but I gave them all Childrens Dramamine and they
were excellent, no sickness at all and rode relaxed. I also think my new Ranger 4wheel drive rides a lot stiffer than my old truck and noticed a few buddies dogs drool when in my box on long trips. Good luck!

dramamine
My Vet recommended dramamine & it has worked on all except 1 Bluetick that HATES to ride. She starts drooling before the truck engine starts. Yes, dramamine does make them a little groggy. Also, NOT feeding within 12 hrs. of traveling also cuts down on carsickness. If you can't allow a 12 hr. period, then try for 3 - 4 hrs. no food or water before loading. My Vet also told me that dogs don't assimilate Benadryl well & he didn't recommend it for travel sickness.
If you don't have dramamine, try giving Pepto Bismol liquid or tablets about an hr. before loading. I've had fairly good luck with that too.
