Here's the thing, you need to look a little deeper into the equation. Never make a cross because it looks good on paper; instead the dogs you intend to line breed must possess not only balance, but strengths in similar characteristics and possess no similar weaknesses. Line breeding not only enhances the good; it also enhances the poor qualities as well. What you are striving for is a dog with more of the good qualities than the poor ones. That being said, I have two littermate males off a half-brother X half-sister cross one went from nothing to GRNTCH in ten hunts; the other, was high scoring dog at the two hunts I put him in before he was drowned. O.K. the question regarding using good selection has already been covered. So I will address the issue of whether or not such a cross is too close.

I currently own a female that 6 generations of her pedigree was line bred on her dame's mother's side. Her sire and dam are 1/2 brother and 1/2 sister by the same mother. The sires were also related; one sired by Rock River Cord and the other sired by Rock River Tell Sackett. Now, there is no other way to cut this up, but to say there was some serious line breeding in this cross. Oh, and the mother's sire was Sackett Jr.

Scientific research tells us that without any serious genetic faults in a line of dogs that dogs can be safely be line bred to 20% Inbreeding Coefficient.

To look at the above female one would think that she should surely have an inbreeding coefficient above 20%. Nope, her inbreeding coefficient is under 20%. All right, she isn't a whole lot under 20%, but she is under 20%.

I do plan on out crossing her.

So to answer your question if the 1/2 brother 1/2 sister cross above is o.k. I suspect that most should be fine.
