Hunting young dogs with a garmin
I have a year old walker he can tree a coon. What I have noticed is he may locate and not be sure the Garmin shows him treed I dont run in there and check till he locks down and turns it over he may go on.I just wonder how many people jump the gun and rush in there to check just because the Garmin shows him treed?
my garmin has said my dog is treed when he was still tracking ,im sure he lifted his head to let out a bawl and it said treed

Been following these walker dogs since 1983,and love every min of it !!!!
http://minnesotastatecoonhunters.webs.com/
Use SunSpot Lights, so bright its like the sun came out at night !!!
if the dog is poking around and doesnt move more than i think a few feet it'll say he's treed.. seen that a bunch when he's smelling up a log crossing or just getting a drink,,,lol
I wait on the dog to tell me its treed. The Garmin isn;t the only tracking system that says a dog is treed when its not. The beep beeps give you false tree signals all the time if your hunting hills.

The only thing I let Garmin tell me is where my dog is. I own the dang thing and I will be got danged if that little chinese made piece of electonics will give me any lip!!
I bleed awesome and the Garmin is my slave!

Not uncommon for a youngun to lack confidence and look up and maybe bump a tree or even tree a little and move on or come off and check and either stay, move on, or mill around...
I used a lighted collar this year starting my pup and stayed on his butt when i could...i could see when he was bumping trees..i could shine it and see if it had a coon up it or not...if it had a coon i talked to him and got to him quick..if it didnt i didnt say a word or move in on him...no leaves on the trees made my job easy....having a natural coon dog puppy made my job easy as well...built up his confidence quickly and he was locking down before long....before he was a year i could drop the gate and cut him and sit on the gate and wait for those dying locators and go in and see him locked down under a coon...
Different guys train differently...but that is how i do it...get them to the woods..get em on good tracks and build their confidence and hone their skills...
Lots of nites in the woods and lots of walkin...

if the collar gets turned or like was said the dog is looking up it will sometimes show treed. i never use that to tell if mine is treed. now i do use the track to see if the dog is hung up on track by milling around the same spot over and over. thats when i go in to maybe see if the dog is just not sure of its self yet. its a great training tool if you use it right.
Garmin's show treed due to inactivity not looking up. The beep beep collars work off of weights in the collar, garmin does not. So your dog is probably walking slowly smelling the area and that is why it shows treed.

Let's get Ticked
Read what he said he said his dog LOCATES afew times and the garmin says he is treed. Most of know that there is not a traditional tree switch in a garmin like the old beep beeps.
I think using the garmin like you described is a great tool to help get a young dog really cranking. Case in point I once started a young bluetick got him to the point where he would run and tree with others in style and descided it was time to hunt him alone. Same type of thing he would locate and then check the tree then locate and check the tree. Like L.Lyle said eventually there is a bunch of lines intersecting showing you where the tree is. I would sneak in there real quit and when he would leave and check the back track or circle around I would shine it real quick. There was almost always a coon in those trees. Since he had the coon and was just lacking the confidence to settle in I would wait until he came back in and located again and run in there and leash him and praise him up well then he would come unglued and tree his guts out. I would then back out of there and whatch the clock and let him tree for anywheres from five to ten minutes then come back in and put the coon down on him. It only took a week or so of doing that and he quit being so insecure and when he located he was treed from then on. Now I am sure that if I kept hunting him and only shot down the coons that he legitamately treed he would have made just as good a coondog but I firmly believe that utilizing the garmin shortened his learning curve by a long shot. You got the tools why not use them? For traditions sake or pride? Please, a garmin can be used in so many ways to enhance your training why not use it?

htx if dog is milling around tree its a fault garmin or no garmin ! garmin is great training tool and piece of mind because you know where its at !
How often does a dog have to bark to be treed?
Once every 2 min on dishonest folk.

Makes you wonder with two minutes a dog could meet you 15 feet off the tree and in 5 seconds be back on the tree clipping off 120 BPMs but get minussed for putting his head down and going back on track in that 5 seconds when he still has 1 minute and 55 to go. LOL

htx rule dogs must tree and stay for 5 minutes before hunter arrives at tree garmin has no bearing on this matter
quote:Five minutes = 2 barks . Then he still has 1 minute after the five to summon up another bark. Then another bark in two minutes etc. How you going to find him without a Garmin?
