(OT) Who has chickens on here?
I know this is a coonhound site but o well. It doesnt hurt to mix it up a little. I was just wondering how many of you coonhunters have chickens that you fool with. I hadnt had any in several years. I got to thinking and so well now I have a few. LOL I got me some Rhode Island Red Bantams last week. They are sure fun to watch and mess with. So if you have any post pics and tell a little about them. Btw can you tell I am bored. LOL

chickens
I've had chickens off and on since I was nine or ten I'm almost sixty-five now. I've had all kinds of bantams when I was younger now I've got Americanas. I let them loose in the winter, and pen them up in the summer. My wife doesn't like chicken poop on the patio it sticks to her bare feet

My son has 12 RIR that just got feathered. he inherited some floating catfish cages made out of three inch PVC on top to float. He plans tojust turn them upside down and put those chickens in them. Put a roof on it for shade and some hay on top for insulation. Hook a water hose to it and put it out in the pasture. Then every day pull the waterhose to put it in a new spot. I imagine he is going to need a solar powered fence charger. too. He doesn't think he will have to feed near as much. Anybody ever heard of this?
chicken lady
my uncle has 1 rodeiland red rooster and 4 hens up by the barn i love to hear that ole rooster crow in the moronings i kept chickens growing up but quit messin with them i am startin a rabbit factory now you sellin your eggs to cheap they was bring at least 2 dollars a dozen over at wanyesburg live stock action 2 wks ago but thats probly a 4 hr drive 1 way for you
I have 12 golden comets, 6 leghorns, 6 araucanas, and we are also raising 24 cornish game hens.
quote:What makes a cornish game hen taste so different? is it in the feed or the processing or is that just the way they taste. I like them for a change of regular chicken.

quote:Man that Chicken tractor has all the makings of what he is talking about. He is smart but I knew he must have got that idea from somewhere, LOL. Basicaly, neither one of us a hyped up on "sustainable" "natural Organic" and all that stuff but with light weight and stronger materials we sure are not against a better way either. Those catfish cages are PVC and are about 50 pounds and about 12 by 6' . The garden hose gets heavy after three hundred feet ( I know that from experience in my own garden). He is more or less doing this for a better pasture he says for his old crippled up horse that some local yokal doo gooder woman keeps reporting him to the Humane Society. LOL. Horse standing in ankle deep green grass in ten acres and a round bale of hay and 2 scoops of sweetfeed a day. Give me a break Doo Gooders!!! He will probably catch hell about the chickens too. But he don't care and neither do I.

I just started keeping a few chickens in the last year. I've got 3 old barred rock hens, a banty barred rock rooster, 2 banty barred rock hens, a Silver Laced Wyndotte Rooster, 1 cochin hen, and 1 aracuana hen.
We collect a few eggs but most go to waste. Our chickens are mostly just yard ornaments to give us something to look at.
I'd like to add more poultry in the future. They are inexpensive to acquire and care for and are cheap redneck entertainment.
I haven't incubated any, but I'm hoping for a natural hatch but I'm not having much luck getting any hens to go broody enough yet. Any pointers?
My Black Jersey Giants are always 'clucking' as my mom puts it. The are always hogging the laying boxes and then I have to throw them out of the pen for a week or so til they get it out of their system. I get all my chicks from Murray McMurray Hatchery in IA. They come in a little cardboard box and the postman calls me to come pick them up cause they are driving him nuts and the rural carrier won't haul them.
Yes I know the eggs are cheap, heck I give them away. Last week alone I sold 22 doz. and I have about 14 doz. sitting here to box up....if I had the boxes....
