Herinated Disc?

I've been fighting back pain for the last few years. Finally had an MRI done a few weeks ago and it appears I have one herniated disc and one buldging.

I first had bad pain late last summer just before Oaks, The Chiro and the sports med Dr had it under control pretty good till the end of Jan when I tripped over a log squirrel hunting and flared it back up. I've had pain ever since the end of Jan.

I've had several shots that hadn't really helped much until last Thursday and they gave me another one and that seems to have calmed it down for now. I'm sure now that I say that I won't sleep tonight.

My Question is how many other coonhunters on here have herniated disc / buldging disc and what did you do for them or are you doing for them? I am trying NOT to have he surgery....

My Chiro does what they call disc decompression and it seems ot be helping now.

Had several friends with your condition and surgery was the last resort as long it was from the middle of spine down to lower back or lumbar. One other friend had a disc out by c5 and 6 which is up in the neck area, He had so much pain and when it moved almost crippled him so he went ahead and got the surgery which was a bone fusion and is doing ok now. You will know when to go under the knife "when you just can't take it anymore" JMHO

I do. Mine hurts every single day of the yr. The Chiro keeps me able to get around ok. Never had a shot but been thinking about it. 2 yrs ago. I was right at the point of surgery. Then This new Chiro helped me. Surgery is the very last resort for me. I don't want it. Mainly because I don't know anyone it has fixed.

well hobo I feel your pain as I am afflicted with the same thing. My doctor gave me a list of exercises to do every day to strength stomach muscles to help support the injured discs. Helps some, when mime flares up I take 4 ibuprophen (sp) every four hours and that seems to take the swelling down and relieves the pressure.

good luck with it.......... and don't try to use that as an excuse not to come to oaks........................

mine hss

been messed up for months, chiropractic helped but not cured. I am now going to a bone and joint specialist wish me luck. When mine flares up i can only walk by stooping over leaning on my left leg .. I had one quack doc tell me it was minor wear and tear, i almost slapped the spit out of his mouth lol..

I'm 59 years old and got a couple of herniated disc in my lower back, been this way going back to when I was in my thirties. At times would walk every where bent over like I was looking for something, real painful. I though this was bad then one night crossing a creek I twisted the wrong way and learned what the sciatica nerve is felt like my leg was burning up had to ride about 20 miles standing up in the bed of truck to get home. The Dr. recommended surgery but I did'nt let them do it. Now I'm very careful and never pick up any thing very heavy no real problems with it in the last few years.

Warn I've been fighting the Sciatic Nerve pain sooo bad I've ben taking 4 or 5 Aleve every 4 - 6 hours.

I'm sure there is no way I could ride to In if its hurting like it has been. Think maybe you boys could take up a donation so I might could FLY OUT?

Inversion table

Ive got a bulging disc in my lower back. The doc wanted to start shots but the guys I knew that had had them acted like it was more of a band aid till you have to have surgery. It just mask the pain so you dont know if you are making it worse until the shot wares off. I bought an Inversion Table and hang from it 3 or 4 times a week for 5 to 15 minutes. It has worked wonders! I have my flexability back, vertually pain free, and I can work out again as hard as I want. Thanks Justin

I have had two surgeries for ruptured disc. The last one was june 3rd of last year.I hunted 20 nights the month of september.Finding the right doctor is the key.

Part of the reason i don't want to have the surgery is I had a cousin pass away last year a week after having a back surgery...

HOBO

I KNOW WHAT YOU GOING THROUGH I FELL OFF A TRUCK AND MESSED MY DISK UP IN MY NECK IT HURTS ON A DAILY BASIS SOMEDAYS I CAN HARLEY MOVE MY NECK ALSO HAVE ARTHRITIS IN MY SPINE AND LOWER BACK AND A HERANATIED DISK SOME DAYS IT GOES DOWN IN 1 OF MY LEGS AND I JUST HAVE TO TRY TO LAY IN A POSTION THAT I GET THE LEAST PAIN THEY KEEP ME ON STRONG PAIN MEDS BUT I ONLY TAKE THEM WHEN I GET IN SO MUCH PAIN I JUST CANT TAKE IT ANY MORE I AINT GOING TO GET HOOKED ON NO PAIN KILLERS HOPE YOU THE BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR BACK PROBLEM

Posted by Rip on 05-15-2012 01:34 AM:

Surgery is a legitimate answer to the problem. It works, but some people don't want it to work (they like the tabbys) and some expect it to make them 15 again, which it can't do.

As someone here has already said a good surgeon is the key, that and doing it at the right time.

Wait too long and there is no fixing it, go too early and you don't get much improvement from it.

Physical therapy, chiropractic, injections and medications all have their place, and surgery has it's place.

Just make sure you have a good relationship with a back surgeon so that you can make that decision about if and when in an educated way. You may never need surgery, but you might and getting in touch with a good surgeon early will help.

Hobo I dont know whether flying is a good idea. That much flapping with your arms might make your back worse, LOL Seriously Hobo when the pain gets real bad surgery is the only option. I had back surgery back in 1978 and believe me it is the answer to all that back pain. Back surgery is a whole lot better than it was 20 or 30 years ago. Good luck I know what u are going through. Find a good doctor and bite the bullet.

surgery

I had spinal fusion on my lower back in 2006 and went from constant nerve pain in my leg to no pain at all.
I was off work for 12 weeks after surgery .
My back is not near as strong as it was but the pain is gone.
If I ever have problems with a different disc , I won't hesitate to have another one.
We will PRAY everything goes well. Joe

Dennis I have had it for a few years now. I went to Vanderbilt after back pain and testicular pain over the same diagnosis. I have worked to hard over the years. The people at Vandy sat me down and told me to get all the excess fat off the body, do the excersizes prescribed. Take MSM and Glucosamine and nsaids when needed. In other words eat right, excersize and take your vitamins and you can get by for several more years without surgery. I do still have back pain, but its managable. I been hunting hard in these mts even some night hunts. No more fried foods for YOU

Losing weight, especially around the belly, will definately help back pain.

That and good exercise/physical therapy. Lee is spot on.

A good Chiropractor fixes mine when I mess it up. I had to learn what I could and could not do. I can lift and I can twist but I can not do both at the same time!

I am a barber and a lot of my customers have had back surgery. I have a bad back, neck and hip. I don't have the money to have the MRI much less the surgery. If I could afford it though I would have the back, neck and hip fixed. Unless they are really bad over weight they bounce back from the operations fast these days.
I messed up my back in the oil field when I was 18. I am 54 now and should of had it fixed a long time ago.
