Coondog the true definition

I would like to know what others think a real coondog is!

a dog that opens on track and trees real coons with or without help and stays till you get there !

I would say you are right but how about consistency, ability to take any kind of track and moving it well and style I would say that a good hound is a lot easier to come by than a real coondog.

john... in my opinion a real coondog is one that can take the track away from other dogs and make them looksilly.... one that can win when competeing and doesnt have to get by itself to win... do i have one... heck no but i sure wish i did.... i want to also take this time to appoligize for my behavior on your earlier post... it was uncalled for

to me there is diferent levels of true coondogs its all with there style how they hunt 1 can can get deep with the meat the other will tree the one that was passed up some can drift a track other can smoke one or tree a lay up..some will use the wind..most all coonhunters pick what they call a coondog based on what they like in a hound..JMO As for me im still lookin lol..

A dog that lives to tree coon and always finds a way to get the job done. Usually takes about 5 or 6 years to get there but they develop a talent that overcomes there shortcomings. Single minded determination to get parked under a coon.
Whenever this question is asked people start talking about the bells and whistles, things like a cold nose, a big mouth, independent, deep hunter, good handle, great bloodline, The list is endless depending on what a person likes and where he hunts But as nice as they are these things have very little to do with what it takes to get a coon treed.

All of you have different ideas about what a real coondog is and I want to thank you for your input! I was taking a small survey just to get to one point and that is what satisfies one person may not another but in the end the owner is the only one who has to be satisfied. At some point someone who had in their mind sat down and wrote the standards of what a coonhound is supposed to be! From those standards came our rules, now there are the black and white ones which are easy to follow and should be to a tee! There are those that leave room for opinion whether it be the area your from or the different idea of how a dog should perform we all have some different ideas,that doesn't mean any of them are dead wrong just opinionated , just like different ideas of what a real coondog is! By the way Steve I have no hard feelings. I will tell you this again I did judge you fairly I do it no other way!

my opinion of a coon dog is a dog that runs a track good ,hits the tree and shuts down to double check the tree before they set down and tree .also they should not be trashy,and be able to tree coons night after night .

maybe the question should be reworded. what is the minimum requirement for a coonday? as for me, that's a dog you turn lose and it finds a coon track, barks on track, usually find the coon in the tree, barks enough for me to find it.

what are the characteristics of a great coondog. i have no first hand experience with this but have read a lot about on here.

ranjunrebelblues, Truer words have never been spoken! We all can relate to that, as my uncle told me years ago, we all kill one big buck and have one truely great dog in our life, and we spend the rest of our life trying to find another. I never understood what he had said, nor it's meaning until the gray hairs started to show up and those who used to mentor me had passed on.

A true coon dog

just because a dog can tree a coon doesnt make it a "coondog" thats just a hound... a true coondog can tree coons in the mid of winter when the ground is froze... and the mid of summer when its dry... on a full moon night... its a coon dog 365 days a year not just when the conditions are perfect
