Getting a dog to hunt by themselves
What is everyone's opinion on getting a dog to hunt by itself? I have one that will go as far as the company she's in, but when you cut her by herself she wants to hang around your feet for 15 min and then she might finally wonder off 150 yds or so.. She don't need help treeing a coon, and she's not the dog that can take a whipping either.. Any suggestions?

Hunting alone
I've always had the best luck just starting them thru the woods and getting back in the truck and closing the doors and tailgate and just waiting. It may take a few boring nights but most of them will eventually go on and hunt.

Barrelmaker, That is what I have been doing...

I guess persistence is a virtue but it's one I will live without. I decided long ago that there are too many well bred puppies out there and my time on this earth is too short to be wasted on shy dogs, mean dogs, or dogs that won't go. I ain't above walking a pup but about 12 nights out, they have taken their last walk.

Personally when I get one that wants to act like that I close up the truck and get me a switch. I do not use a e-collar for this, just a switch. The dog WILL leave the truck before I'm through. When it leaves it is welcome to come back in and will be praised and petted. I try to teach that they MUST go but CAN come back. It has always worked for me.

I had that problem once and a guy told me to just get in the truck and sit down. It works I have had to use it a couple times on differant dogs. If they can't get to you after a while they just gave up and went hunting. After a while they just get in the habbit.

Nothing will make me quit on a dog quicker than a lack of drive. Id rather have 1 run a deer all night than stand at my feet. I started a young dog a couple years ago that had all the tools to be great, but was happy to just hang out and go for a walk, i tried everything thats been suggested and when i finally gave up on him and realized he was a cull i told myself that would be the last time. Like Jim said life is to short.

aint it fun
get a switch and crouch down on the ground and when the dog gets near just flick your wrist and keep switchin her legs till she heads out. worked for me on one of my better ones. i'm not talkin beating the dog, the only thing that should move is your wrist and the switch.

When she goes with other dogs does she open and run like she wants to get in front. When she trees does she bark up a tree and not know why she's doing it or because she wants the coon to chew on? Hard for me to imagine one standing around if it knows and likes what it's doing.

She don't follow them. She runs it to catch it and beats old dogs to the tree.. She will split tree and all.... She hasn't been hunted by herself at all, but she's ready to be singled out.

My old dog here wouldn't hunt a lick alone until she was over 2 yr old. Id whoop, stomp, holler, get mad, blow the horn once she hid under truck. Crank truck. Nothing worked. Now she would go miles with anything else and get alone and get split didn't matter but had to be another dog turned loose. Well one evening she got loose here at home. I came in late and heard her treed way in there. Next night I went. Cut her and she left out like a bullet and got treed well over a mile away. From that day till this un. She will bust a hole in the dark. Something snapped in her that night she got loose!! I've had em since that never would hunt alone to amount to anything. Its gotta show me something special to even attempt to make em go nowdays.
