Feeder bucket's shouldn't be allowed in a competetion hunt!!!
I would like to see all use of feeder bucket's banded... So many hunts today use feeder bucket's all the local guides hounds are used on the buckets on a regular basis and finish thier hounds by doing such. Most of these type hounds can't even strike a coon in wild let alone ever tree one. A porch poddle can tree a coon on a feeder bucket but does that make it a GRAND NITE CHAMPION coon hound? I don't think so.... Does a hound treeing a pop up coon off of a feeder bucket prove its ability to strike and tree a coon? It's not allowed in the UKC hunt test program so why are they allowed in nite hunts that really matter? Who decides on these rules and reguations anyways? If being the use of Feeder Bucket continue to be allowed then change the degree earned as being Feeder Bucket Champion... All coon hound breds are so far out of wack now you can't even hardely find a hound like we once had way back before registration papers and feeder buckets. We need to get back to our Heritage some way some how. For those who agree with this statement we can do our part if we work at it. So how many Houndsmen are out there or are we all just feeder bucketmen.....

I don't hunt with feeder buckets or comp hunt but I do think that feeder buckets are a good way to get young dogs started. I know I spend a lot of time in the woods and come up with not getting treed. If I used feeder buckets it would sure help get my dogs doing better a lot quicker. I got my son a pup and I'm gonna put some out to get him started cause with my dog its been a hard road in thin coon and I feel she would be doing a lot better by now.
I don't competition hunt and only use feeders in the off season. I like to hunt young dogs off of them. But, how would you stop folks from hunting off buckets in competition hunts? All they would have to do is remove the buckets the afternoon before the hunt. I agree that it is unfair but I see no way to stop it. A smart dog knows where the bucket is just as well as his owner does.

I just put 2 feeder buckets out about a month ago.I drop the young dogs off on them usually the first drop.I should have done it years ago.I wouldnt drop on them in a comp. hunt, i wouldnt think it would be fair.

I like them in the summer time when it gets dark about 9 or so. Other then that they cost me more than I want to spend.
I have not used a feeder bucket in 15 years. I kill every coon I tree in the kill season because it is required of me where I hunt. Normally I have it timed to get a pup started running good and maybe treeing some by the time alligators come out and i quit and lay them up all summer. Plus the fact that I just don't like training pups in the summer in SC. Where I live the gators are not within a mile any direction but are everywhere where I normally hunt and kill.
But I goofed up this year timing wise. The pups I kept were born in July. only 4 months old in November. Kept three, another mistake. Still had one from last year to finnish too. My 97 year old mother now needs 24-7 attention and I do it 4 nights, which also cut down on the hunting the pups got.
In other words I am fixing to put out two buckets. One at the back of the pasture and one at the pecan orchard. I can stand on the front porch and see if eyes are at either. Up all night anyway with dear old mom I can slip out for 20- 30 minutes like that. I'll Keep inching those buckets further from the woods too so it is not a slam bam. Two or three times per pup all summer is all I want.
Feeder Comp Hunting is not a new arguement on here. Somebody will finally say that Wild Coons feed at Feeders LOL.
Somebody else is also right, there is no way to catch it if the bucket is gone by noon and the coon don't know it yet . LOL.
What is the difference in dropping on a feeder bucket, and dropping in a corn field?I dont have feeders but,I like going to them in hunts. My dog is going for the scent of a coon ,not the scent of the bucket. Most times there are so many tracks at feeders that some dogs look stupid anyway.

I have no problem with starting pups or pleasure hunting on them but you guys are missing my point alot of dogs are being granded out on feeder buckets and alot of these hounds can't tree a coon unless it is on a feeder bucket I have seen way to many times. Here in WV the coons are very thin but a real coon dog can get treed without a feeder bucket... Where bucket hound will not....

Feeder Buckets
Feeder buckets are alright to draw coons in. But once they figure on the bucket, and it's empty, I personally wait two days to drop in that immediate area. I don't shoot coons out often, (very rarely). Buckets ruin the dogs nose.
All the hard running "Bucket Dogs" out there, I personally wish you LUCK...
This might include some of my homies
i dont have any buckets but to tell the truth the few i have been cast on were some of the harder tracks to run
When I go to a hunt, I want to tree a coon. IMO, there is nothing worse than wasting your time, entry fee money, and gas money on a dead cast. If a guide has to hunt a feeder to help the cast have a winner so be it, I'll gladly take my chances.

Cartwright I agree with you on the comp. hunting on feeders. We have two feeders out that we drop the dogs about 1/4 mile away from and they open or tree before they get to the feeder.

I do like them but not for the reason most of you all do a few years back I used them a lot especially in the spring started finding sick coons at my bucket took a couple that I found and some dead ones to a vet friend they had distemper
wiped out most of the coons on that farm distemper is worse in the spring than any other time of the so my ? is or we helping or hurting our coon population over all if they are coming in to a small area to feed what ever sickness one has they all will have including rabies

Everytime this subject comes up you have those saying ban them but not one of those guys ever bothers explaining how they would go about enforcing any such ban. Do they think they see every feeder out there? They do think ANYONE knows where every feeder is? What do you do when you have a good drop and then happen to walk past an unknown feeder on the way back to the truck? Any such ban would be completely impossible to enforce so why even bring it up?

Competition hunting off of feeder buckets is why I have so little regard for titled dogs these days. Many titled dogs can't hunt well and run a track well enough to find and tree a coon without running off of a bucket.
You guys keep telling yourselves you've got a coondog. You might be the only ones that believe it.
