Vet says no more treatment 4 heartworm?

Had my dog tested 4 heartworm this week. The results were negative. The vet told me that u can't cure heartworm anymore because there not making the drug 2 treat it anymore. My buddies dog has heartworm and has been waiting months 4 the second dose. Vet can't get it. Does anybody know anything about this? Learn a lesson from my buddy and keep your dogs on heartworm preventative!!! Any help would be appreciated!

Tramisol/Levasol will kill heartworms also.
But , it doesn't take 18 months.

Not to start anything as I respect anything Mr Brooks has too say but I would use a higher dose of ivermectine for the HW's before I try the Tramisol/levasol treatment. Depending on the infestation in my experience it seems the tram/lev seems to be a little tougher on the dog.

I used to worry about Ivermec. The two pups got mange and the vet put them on a cc every day for thirty days. It cleared up and they appear to be very happy heathy pups.

Evidently Ivermec is not suposed to get the adult heartworms just the filaria. Using the monthly dose all I can guess is the mature ones must die off one a time over time. I have sold dogs that had the second test that tests for adult worms in addition to the blood exam to see the wigglers and both came back Neg. That dog did not get on preventative untill he was 1 1/2 years old. So realy he did not go untreated that long since i's supposed to take nine moths from the mosquito bite to a grown worm.

Bring your dog to a local vet here and it will have heart worms. I don't care if it has them or not.

Well thats just bad vets, I doctor with an ol livestock vet thats 70 plus years old He asks if the dog has been on preventive then says well I dont see no need to test for HW's unless you just want to pay me $25 so I can take the wife out to lunch. lol

It's a sheep wormer I got at the feed store.
Haven't had to use it in years , but I think it's still around.
1/2 pill a day for two weeks , 1 week off , then 1/2 a pill a day for two weeks again.
DO NOT HUNT THE DOG ! Just keep it tied or kenneled. Don't let them run around and race-horse and such.

Does the same thing , kills the larva and sterilizes the adults and they die off gradually.
Never noticed any difference in the 2 dogs that we treated.
Back then , the vets used stricknine(sp?) poison to treat heartworms.
THAT was ROUGH on a dog. Every body I knew that had dogs treated that way said their dog wasn't the same after they got them back.

micooner may be right.
It may be rougher than Ivomec , I don't know cause I've never used the Ivomec.

i knew a guy that cured his dog from heartworms by useing ivomec, but for the life of me i cant remember how much he gave the dog. the dog lived to be 14.

Posted by nccoonhunter197 on 04-23-2012 12:31 PM:

I have always used ivomec or the generic ivomectrine. If a dog has heart worms I was told to give them a small dose and see how they do and work your way up to a full dose. I gave a walker female a half dose and for three days I thought she was going to die and when she was back to normal I gave her a full dose and it didn't bother her. After the first dose she passed blood, would not eat, and did not drink much water. I gave her a monthly dose after that till I had to have her put down. I did know she had heart worms when I got her. If I had known I would have started her with a smaller amount.

Been years ago, but like Jackbob42, we cured a couple with levesol. We dosed it just like he noted and the next tests on the dogs came back negative!

You need to get a steriod to help the dogs body dispose of the dead worms and keep it's strength up. I would start with 5 tenths of a CC per 10 lbs once a week for a month. If you watch the dog very closely you can tell if you killed to many worms at one time because it will really tear them down for a few days. I killed one several years ago with just a little to much Ivomec. He was getting his strength back and the vet told me to give him another 1cc, I did and it finished him. Be patient and slowly treat the worms.
I have a lab puppy that is getting 1.1 cc per day to treat an inherited type of mange and he only weighs 43lbs. They say he is parasite free but I think he must have a tape worm the way he eats.
