every pup is different, let her go at her own pace. and just cuz she wont bark at a caged coon doesnt mean she wont run and tree, my dual ch walker female wouldnt bark at a caged coon till she was almost 5 years old, still doesnt have a whole lot of interest in them but she is a COONDOG anyways

She is more like a pup and her brother is running and treein and will go deep and shows sighns of independence already, he was treeing squirells at 4.50 mo. and 5mo. old but she is a looker very pretty hound. I guess my problem is I keep comparing her!

Be PATIENT, whatever you do, don`t compare her to her brother! Let her go at her own pace, you already know the blood is there.

I'd sell her and put all my eggs in that male pup. Unless you can hunt all the time hunting two pups the same age is very hard and you have one that is working with you and one that isn't. There are tons of stories out there about pups that start later and become amazing and thats wonderful, but just not for me.

You think a 7 month old should be tearing into a caged coon? Yeesh hard to impress aren't ya. lol

Caged and turned loose coon are the devil.

Dont let it bothern you pal. I dont start to push a dog untill they're 10-12 months. I've seen a lot of females start later but tend to finish faster. If you're set on keeping both I would just focus on the male for the next month or two and let her start at her pace. This is nothing more or less than my opinion.
Good luck to you.

The blood is there 3 out of 6 out of this liter are all ready starting, I've been spending time with her leash and loading and riding in the truck, been letting her run loose when i can, have cats in the yard, she shows a little interest in chasing but i don't encourage it,but don't mind if she does at this point. Thanks for input.

Caged and turned loose coons are the devil? I feel it's a good way to get them started. I normaly turn the coon loose at night and wait awhile before cutting loose figured it would be closer to a real hunt for a pup but more controlled? Any opinions on it? Thanks all for the input

Agreed with the 2nd part to a point and each dog I raised from a pup that amounted to anything didn't have to wait until 7 months to want to tear into a caged coon. Everyone I had that didn't never stayed long enough for me to find out.

the ones that wouldn't get after it I sold to some guy named Trevor for $150 and he made them into Grand Nights.

She is afraid to get to close to one,she shows very little to no interest in a coon.

Let her grow up a little. Just keep working on leading, loading, the whole deal. She is probably just maturing at a slower rate than her littermates, but that dosn't mean that she can't finish out into a nice hound. We have a Grand nite female that could care less about coons in cages, but will tree coons all night long.

Lol what can I say? I have been lucky. One things forsure tho, I had 350 dollars in 3 dogs, 2 I Granded and 1 was a nite ch with 4 wins and was killed. But i hunted the hair off these dogs ALONE.

But back to topic, I have never believed in caged or turned loose coon but im far from an expert when it comes to starting young dogs. As soon as a young hound shows any intrest in running and treeing, patience should be number 1. Keep hunting that young hound and if it is in it it doesnt need caged coon or turned coon to bring it out. This is however just my oppinion. Yall have a nice weekend now.

Mine all see at least one caged coon. Nothing un common about a 7 month old being afraid of one. Wait a couple more months and show her another. I bet it will be different.

Ya thanks for all of input. Not overly worried yet know she still has time, couple months will tell alot. just lookin for some feed back on topic. Everyone has different views on the caged coons though, I feel if not done alot can't hurt, just like to introduce them to what i want them to run, sure hasn't hurt my male pup, he can flat run one and trees it by himself, but have limited it to turned loose coons don't let him see it at all just go dump it out wait and turn him loose let him find it on his own pet him up and praise then take back to the house and leave him up with something to think about and next time you take him out, he hits the ground running. He's at the point now just huntin is all he needs ready for the kits to hit the ground can't wait to see how he does on them, Bet he trees one by himself soon. thanks again all..
