Climbed a tree?

How many people have climbed a tree to shake a coon out for a young dog or a grown dog? I've done it several years ago to get another race going, I was volunteered cause I was the youngest. I tried to talk myself out of it but it wasn't happening. I climbed on up the tree and got about 3 feet from the coon in about a 8 inch pine that was about 15 to 20 feet tall. I shook and shook, that coon was determained he wasn't coming out. Then a guy I was hunting with said i'm bout to squawl, before I could say NO WAIT to let me move he threw out an ole squawl and that coon jumped out of that tree and the race was on. Needless to say that coon hit up another zipcode, we treed a coon but i'm not sure if it was the same one or not.

I think most people that have coon hunted very long has climbed a tree and shook one out. I don't know how many did it before they tried to squal it out first though. LOL

What purpose does shaking a coon out of tree serve?

Falling out of a tree would be a good way to end your coon hunting and perhaps your life. All for what?

Posted by mauser06 on 04-18-2012 08:08 PM:

I have never shaken a coon out...i kinda think it could cause dogs to learn to leave the tree? I dont know...coon either stays up their fat n happy to be chased another niter or gets shot out dead...

iv had to go get a few down my self, one guy i hunted with had a female to fall, and got mest up pretty bad, i used to climbe alot back in the 80s but that was when i had better dogs and a lot less sence one of the best seats in the woods to hear a hot race from the tree

My friend liked to climb and I have always been scared of height. I remember two different pups over the years had never hit a lick on a tree until they watched him climb and shake it out. Tree dogs from the on. I actually thought it was good for a dog to circle the tree. It never hurt mine that i could see anyway. Sometimes the riffle gets left at the truck, he thinks I got it and I think he has it. I got a couple now I got back from across a deep canal by squaling my cheak, popping my hands and stomping my foot. They never had a coon shook out though but I like the fact they listen for one to hit the ground. Some coons are like cats especially in low live oaks. They probably DID have the coon but not after I got there. LOL Sometimes it's a pup that has not started treeing yet that picks it up and the race is on. I'd be disgusted if three dogs lit out from a tree on a screaming track and a dog stayed and treed for treeing sake.

This ol fat boy keeps his feet on the ground lol. But I make sure I take along a tree climber (skin guy) when I go hunting lol.

tree climbing

you will have the nay sayers of tree climbing but they are looking At the tree from a totaly diffrent prespective than i am. i want my hounds or hunting dogs to be the best all the way around. not just tree dogs, but smart track dogs that want to catch the game not just run it up a tree ! were ever the track ends thats were i want him to be , looking up or looking at the meat on the ground dont matter to me if i hear the coon sqaul after hes been caught on the ground then i say job well done .....keep on shakin Boys lol

Tree climbing

There is nothing more fun than watching them eyeballs swaying back in forth in the tree. Lol

Posted by bigdog061 on 04-19-2012 03:44 AM:

Fell 30 feet out of a poplar tree. That was in 1986 I'd climb again, but I am 26 years older and 80 pounds heavier.

When I was a kid I was ffull of energy and tough as nails! I think some folks don't hunt for the same reason as some of us folks do.

Shaking them out is risky and hard because they hold on pretty good lol gotta just grab the tail and whip em out, worked pretty well the times ive done it. Seems like a lot of extra work to climb but it does liven up the night

Happy hunting!

will i'm a 63 old little man and thank goodness i'm still fit enough and maybe dumb enough to climb. i climbed a tree just a few weeks ago. it was a big water oak that had been blown over. it had a lot of limbs growing out of the side which gave me good hand holds. it was scary though being out there, up a tree, by myself. as it turned out, it was only a possum but it hit the ground and the dog let me know how much they appreciate my extra effort.

Lol i've seen dogs up in trees like that and wonder how in the world am I going to get them down. I get to calling the dog and hope he comes down. I've even seen them fall out, it's never a good feeling to watch that happen either but nobody can control what happens while you're walking to the tree. The reason WHY we shook the coon out from what I can remember is that the track was a short track and we wanted a little bit longer race. It was a good race when that coon hit the ground too.

From what I can gather it is mostly southeast states and cornbelt folks that are into long races. LOL

Posted by chadf on 04-19-2012 06:42 AM:

I did it a few times when I was younger but realized knocking one out like that really wasn't for the dogs. Dogs don't need to fight the coon. There job is to track and tree after that its mine to make a clean kill or leave it for another day. I've never seen a pointer that had to fight a quail or a lab that needed to fight a duck so why do some coonhunters think a hound needs to fight a coon?
I plan to run some bear next month and you bet noone is going to climb a tree to shake a bear out or make a crappy shot on purpose.

Posted by l.lyle on 04-19-2012 07:27 AM:

Heck, I had a lab get chased off by a broke wing goose that fell in the pasture. Had to send my squirel dog cur to fetch it up. . LOL
