bad break
Last nite i was hunting my youngun...he winded one on the leash and i turned him out..he went out screamin hot...smoked the track and slammed a tree..came treed right and was there 30 seconds or so...i could see the area he was treed and seen a stand of saplings...said oh man maybe he pulled up short? Went from blowing the top out to smokin hot track! What in the world?!
The race was on...he smoked down the creek another 150-200yds and slammed another tree....another small tree...coon dripping wet still trying to find a comfy spot in the tree...
My best guess is he knocked the coon out of the sapling the first time or it bailed out....
Would been a bad break at a hunt taking the minus! Anyone ever see it at a hunt??
Ive seen it twice that i can remember....both times the coon didnt make it anywhere before he got stretched out....
Hate for him to "learn" to leave a tree...but he did a nice job on the next drop and stayed treed...that dripping wet coon dripping water down on his head had him firedddddd up boy! A track that hot now and again seems to really fire a dog up more than anything...i like them to work a older track once they come on good so they can get to learn to carry out a track and actually use their nose....but love that fire they get from a smokin hot track...

I saw one close to this. Reg hunt out the Columbia City club. Dog treed on buckbrush in a little swamp. The whole cast saw the coon walking in, you couldn't help but see it. Judge orders dog handled, guy grabs his dog and ties him, coon bails. Shine time starts on a little bush with nothing in it. That's as bad as it gets in terms of bad breaks.

I've had it happen before in a hunt but the dogs stayed on the original tree, I believe cause we were already at the tree shining. While we where shining we heard a thump like something hit the ground. Didn't think to much of it at the time until we couldn't find the coon. Shine time was through and we got to thinking about that thump we heard and shined down the bottom and saw a coon not 35 yards in a bigger tree. Ofcoarse we had to minus it but thats how it goes sometimes. I'm pretty sure if it didn't take so long to get there the coon might have stayed. They treed right at a mile away from us.

Okie...he aired it but didnt tree it...wind blowing in our face..he ran into the wind and got struck and ran the track down into the bottom....i figure the coon was on the flat hunting something to eat or just climbed down...wasnt a lay up..he did run track...dont know if the track he ran was the coon he winded or not...ive seen his brother tree lay ups a few times...sometimes he would miss by a tree or 2...watched mine get it right once...ran hard to a tree..stood on it and located and started chopping..i thought he was an idiot...till i looked up abd there sat the coon! Be interesting to see if they get better and/or do it more as they get older....
No tellin if the coon he winded was the same he ran or if he winded one ad when he was on his way to it he hit that track and took it...
I too got no problem with them leaving a bad tree to go find the right one...like you said..i rather them have the smarts to know a good tree from a bad...
Hope my pup keeps it up...he is probably the most accurate dog i have ever hunted...very few dens and 2 slicks since i started him in jan...both slicks were the same nite...not sure what was up...dry tough conditions and he never made it to the water i wanted him to hit those drops....they cant always look great....im very happy with him so far...starting to range out on his own and checks in less and less once he goes...getting faster and more confident every nite...if my buddy keeps him i should be able to start putting wins on him in the fall..

When they air a coon and the coon is moveing they have to stay in the scent trail. Think of it as a dust cloud from a car going down a road with a cross wind. By the time the dust gets to you the car might be down the road a wase.
Now if it is straight up wind they may be able to go straight to it. A dog that has aired a lot will a little wide in both directions to make sure they are in the middle of the scent cone. The cone is just like an ice cream cone and gets wider the further away it gets from the source. This is on flat ground of course. every thing you enter into it comes to play( hill, dip, tree, ect.)
If a dog is moveing fast you can bet it is airing or trailing. Tracking is the second slowest way for a dog to find some thing. Only second to drifting.
Drifting is the art of following an OLD trail were the only scent left is what has drifted in and under clumps of grass and thing protected from the sun and wind.
Some of the hunters refer to a dog that driffts back and forth across a trail drifting but working true drift scent would get a hunting dog shot. Becouse it may be days old. lol
They would do the same thing with a true track dog.

Good info okie! Thanx! I see what you mean about how he aired it in the beginning....that is the first time ive seen him air one like that...the one i watched him lay up he went hunting and got down wind of a tree..ran to it and located...
I dont know if i ever seen a dog air one like that last nite...ususally they are on a leash and we walk across the track or whatever....this was different...could tell he could smell it in the air...
I am looking forward to seeing what this pup has in him...love working younguns and watching them progress...

Bad break
I recall one night in a UKC hunt, cast of 4 GR NITE CHs, all males, first drop dogs all struck and drove a short hot track about 150 yards fell treed and on the way to the tree a fight broke out, as we arrived two dogs were killing a big Ol boar coon about 25 feet from the base of the tree where the other two dogs were still treeing. What a way to start the night 225-

1st and 1st on a slick is -225....wonder what the ruling of that is?? 2 dogs stayed at the tree while 2 stretched it...the time i seen it the cast all got a piece and we plussed the strike and deleted the tree points...they were all declared treed...but knocked him down before we got there...

225-
Yeah I didn't agree with it then either but unfortunately thats how the ruling stood, Mike Raefs dog and mine minused on slick tree and other two plussed, they even tried to bump up their tree points from 3rd & 4th to 1st & 2nd since they didn't kill the coon.Lol but ended up only plussing their strike
225-
WAS YOUR DOG ON THE TREE OR ON THE GROUND KILLING COON, i ALWAYS THOUGHT CAUGHT COON STRIKE POINT PLUS??nOW IF YOUR DOG WAS ON TREE AND NO LEAVES AND NO COON SEEN THEN YES MINUS.
