coon scents????

I've always enjoyed starting young puppies and I've always used coon hides. Wondering if someone could help me? Looking into using scents for drags. What name(brand-name) scents has worked best for ya'll? And how much success have ya'll had with scents? I've also seen scents used for breaking pups from the UNDESIRABLES! LOL ! I've never used scents of any kind and any information would greatly be appreciated! Thanks for reading!

i'll throw my thoughts your way,,,not sure of name brand but i got mine from cabelas,, not a pro coon hunter but been trapping them since ive been 12,n never smelled a coon as strong as the scent, go sparingly on the scent mayb 3 drops starting off then wean back to 1,, and been putting it on an hour or so before using the drag so it aint so strong then

I had two bottles that rode around in my toolbox so long the labels about wore off. One was coon scent and the other buck lure. A friend wanted to break a dog off deer. I smelled them. So I gave him the buck lure to shock with. I said what the heck I got this puppy I'll lay a drag with the coon scent. That pup ran even treed slobbermouth. I think I got the bottles mixed up. He broke his completely off coons and first hunt mine was already a deer dog.

ive used the stuff before but i dont think it will help a dog much. the way i look at it is if a dog is bred to tree coons and you turn him loose wheres theirs coons long enough, he will start to tree coons. ive used the deer breaking scent before but didnt work on my dog, even squirted it in his mouth and face and he still ran a deer like he was tied to it.lol

Back in the sixties dogs were trashier than most women today. Not complaining. We took a 55 gal barrel and punched holes near the top and cut a plywood lid. Enter dog squirt him down with deer breaker , hoist that barrel a little with chain and a real good swivel. Get it spinning, and rock it like a merry go round. It worked about half the time. That was one more stinking barrel full of deer urine and dog puke.

thats funny lyle. when i was growing up i never heard of a straight coon dog and nearly everyone would scald a deer. i dont know the hours i have spent waiting on the dogs thinking ill never see my dog again lol. now days you dont have to wait on dogs, all ya got to do is snap a twig and thell go to treeing and all you got to do is walk to em and pet em up real good so theyll do it again next time lol. we used to put a goat with the dogs to stop them from running deer cause a goat supposed to smell like a deer so they say, but i didnt think so cause they still ran deer. one time the police from the next county called and said i found your dog, i said REALLY he said yeal he was eating a deer.lol

Black buddy of mine had a doe in his barn. He would muzzle a pup and send it in. That doe could put a werser--- kicking on a dog than I ever had to do. About three episodes of that and it was almost 100%. I just now walked out and let a young dog that don't know much out the box. There were three deer near the garden , six rabbits playing in the yard, and a possum staring out from under the wheel chair ramp. I sicked the pup just to get gone. He did around the pecan orchard across the deer and came back and wagged his tail at the possum under the ramp. I said, "what you got there?" and he just came on back. Now mind you he has had a half dozen coons in his mouth the old dogs treed. But he helped run. I'm wondering if he is worthless? But I doubt it knowing his granddaddy and daddy and his momma and her granddaddy. They just like coons seems to me like.

lyle if the grandparents and the mama and daddy are coon dogs i would think hes got as good a chance as any of makeing it. its to bad yall got all them gators all over the place around there cause right now is a good time to be hunting a pup. i hunt year round and all we got is snakes, i dont worry about the dog getting bit so much as i worry about me getting bit lol. i dont were no snakeleggings cause its so hot and only use bug spray when the seed ticks are out. i made a mistake one summer night by going shirtless lol i didnt think i was going to get out of the wood alive, iam not ashamed to admit i was crying like a baby that night.lol

Ya'll got seed ticks too? I hate them. If my kahkis turn brown when I am working in the woods I quit and get to a shower. I don't get redbugs ever since I reached puberty but them seedticks got no respect for a man nor beast. Mee too , heck with snakes , they ain't nothing. Now yellow jackets and wasps, I can still do a ten second hundred yard dash.

lol lyle them yellow jackets will flat get my attention. i was playing army with my cousin when i was little, and i layed down on the ground to get a better shot and layed down on a yellow jackets nest lol them jokers were eating me alive and i took off to mama hopeing she could make them stop and my little cousin was running behind me laughing his tail off lol. if i can get to the seed ticks before they bite down on me i use duct tape, it might pull a few hairs off but its better than itching for days. if they already chomped down i pour a little bleach in my bath water and it helps kill them jokers.
