Can you stil train a 2yr old?
i have a 2 yr old walker dog. he has the bloodline in him so i was told. he just hasnt been hunted that much. i got him 3 days ago i took him out last night he left my feet went about 130 yrds and then came back. any suggestions on a good way to work with him? please reply.
If he isnt someone elses cull and just hasnt really been messed with, just treat it like a pup. He is still young. Show him a coon..turn it out for him and see what he does. Turn out another coon without him seeing or smelling it (i.e. dont take coon and dog to field or woods together. I like to have a buddy drive behind me and then go and turn it out and I come back after the cage and he has left and turn the dog out within 30-50yrds) This way hell pick up the trail and just see how he does. If he trees it give it to him. If not work him some more. Dont show him a bunch of coons but give him some good tracks. Then take him with another broke dog. See how he progresses. If he isnt been messed up and isnt a cull he should be fairly easy to get going. i myself like for a dog to be a little older before I really hunt em.

Ok man thanns ill try it. I meen he shouldnt be ruined. He was hunted with a older dog and would tree. But alone idk what to expect. Ive haf him for 2 days so i havent had out but once. He didnt do anything. Do you have a preference on coon scent? I meen would that help ive been trying to catch a coon havent had any luck they are not walking alot right now so.
train him
They are born with the instinct to hunt you just need to help him alone . I had a three year old dog that the owner told my dad was untrainable. He gave her to me and she was the first dog I ever trained and the best dog we ever had.

This is my first dog so i am trying to get advice from so people that know what they are doing. Imma gonna hunt him alot ill have to see. You have a preference on coon scent and a rag like dragging it? Or is he to old for that?
Given the information you've shared so far it seems to me like this dog hasn't been hunted alone so he has no real clue what to do by himself. He also probably has no confidence in himself at this point either. If he has been treeing with another dog it's probably just a matter of putting him into situations where he stands a good chance of running into a track. Think of it in terms of starting a new job where someone "shows" you what your supposed to do and then turns you loose on your own to do it. For most people it takes a little while before they start to feel comfortable and confident in their ability to perform their job. The more you turn him alone, the further and harder he will go looking for something to run as he gains confidence. Be patient, he may take a while to really get going out, or he may just be a closer type dog. Time will tell. Good luck.
Thanks man. I just tried him on the scent rag and he took off and treed the rag with ease. He didnt struggle one bit. He winded it and then bam he was gone. Treed solid for 25 mins. Never left. Im going to hunt him tomorrow again. I am working on catching a coon to turn loose for him to tree. Thanks for your input!
Put a sour corn feeder out. There will be plenty of scent to get his adrenaline going. If you get good tracks off of the feeder use it quite a bit. If your dog goes in and trees on the feeder and all the coon scent in the area but does not bother to find the coon then quit using it.

Should I kill the first coon that he trees? To reward him?

Yea I used a scent rag today he trailed it and treed the rag about 100 yards away. Not to bad he stayed on the track good. He treed for 25 minutes. I know thats not really treeing But he Was steady barking i left him alone to. What's you opinions on this? What should be my next step?
i bought a 7 yr old female for rasin pups and in the mean time i would take her huntin and she ended up makin a decent hound that would tree u a coon

good luck- be patient....
Yea I thnk he will turn out good. I going to work with him a lot. Any suggestions on a caged coon? Should I let him see it or just have and let it go about 30 yards in front and let me go on it?
I ment let him go on the coon.
With pups, I always let them see the caged coon, bark at it and get all fired up, pull it up a tree and let them tree it a little, then tie them back, let the coon go in front of the pup (do this away from trees so the coon has to run a ways before taking a tree), about the time the coon hits the tree line, let the pup go.
Then I go catch another one, take it for a walk with a hog catcher and put it up a tree, usually leave one of my boys there to make sure it stays up the tree, then I go get the pup and turn him out towards the start of the line and see what he does.
Finally, I catch one more, take it out, let it go, wait 5-10 minutes and turn the pup out toward the start of the line and see what he does. He may or may not tree the coon.
Then, I hunt him with a straight coondog some, and alone a lot. If he has it in him he will be fine.
Being 2, and already having treed some, I'd probably skip the first step (he already knows what a coon is and that he's supposed to chase and tree it) and go right to the second.
Don't make it too easy on him though or he'll think it's always supposed to be easy andwon't work for it. Don't show him too many caged coons or he'll think it's your job to bring them to him to play with.
And NEVER knock a coon out of a tree that he is not treeing. I screwed up a dog like this at the beginning of my dog raising career. I was thinking it would be good for him to have some fur in his mouth, so we were out hunting when he was 8-9 months old and I saw one in a tree, called him over close, and shot the coon out. He killed it quick and had fun doing it. I did this a couple more times and what it taught him was that it was my job to find the coons and his job to kill them when they hit the ground. Never did get that idea out of that dog's head.

ok man i will try that idea. He does fine with the rag and scent. but i dont think he has a very cold nose he can find the trail and he will ball on the track on the way but he will go off it as if he is working it good and then hit the tree. im not sure if that is bad or good.
