sour corn kills?

i was reading about sour corn for feeders erlier and it said it kills alot of game. anyone know if its true? i never herd of it before.

I've been feeding it for years and I haven't seen evidence of critters dieing. Hogs and coons mop it up.

How do you make yours?

Posted by GLANCY'S 7 MILE on 04-16-2012 04:13 AM:

Take a 5 gal bucket full of corn and fill it up with water, let it sit for a few days, then put it in your bucket or pipe feeder.

Or simply use a tire feeder filled with corn and fill it with water.

You can put kool aid, brown sugar, syrup, mollases, vanillia, or whatever you desire in it, but plain ole sour corn will do the trick.

Must be reading about aphlatoxin corn. That is corn that wasn't harvested dried properly or stored dry enough. That is diffenent than sour corn.

Posted by chadf on 04-16-2012 02:29 PM:

sour ferminted corn is ok its damp moldy corn that kills. If you are going to use sour corn make sure it stays in water and you will be fine.

soured corn could kill if you drink to much of it!

This is a common misconception, aphlatoxin is a fungus, hot dry summers with a warm humid august is prime conditions for this fungus, We have dried corn down below 15.5 % moisture for sale to the elevators and they still check for it. Moldy or rotten corn will make animals sick if fed that way.

Yes a load got through into Diamond dog Feed that made news about 15 years ago and likely why they are having recalls now. And likely happens from time to time on all feed manufacturers you never hear about.

We had some up here about 10 years ago where the elevator checked every load but i don't know if they test every load these days, I think the problem really is not every kernel of corn in a load will have it so if the sample doesnt have an infected kernel how can they really catch it.Look at it this way a truck carries 1000 bushels a load or 56000 pounds and the elevator pulls about a pound to check moisture, test weight and so on.
