question
how should i turn my 8 month old loose on a coon. my plan was let it go infront of her and let the coon get in the woods a little ways and then turn the dog loose. whats your opinion?
might be best to wait a few more months but if you give the coon pleanty of time to get away and get up a tree then id say go for it. knock it out dead though, 8 mos might take a good butt whooping.

My only tip would be to turn the coon loose out in the middle of a big field, toward the woods. Lots of times if you turn them lose in the woods they climb the first tree they come to. [/QUOTE] i agree!
most 8 month old pups just think they want a piece of mr coon .seen em cut up pretty bad sometimes pup will go backwards instead of fowards.so imo wet it down let em see it make sure its gone then cut the pup loose ..good luck

i forgot to mention the coon only has 1 front foot will it still climb trees?
Best thing to do is have someone chase it up a tree...i usually turn loose in an open field with a lone tree and have someone chase the coon up it....too many times that coon has decided to hit a hole or brush pile and not climb...and i dont wanna see my dogs in a hole or brush pile...so i make sure they get treed the first time!
Had one this winter that didnt wanna climb...was alone and the coon ran for the pond not the tree! It swam in the pond a while..turned the pup out hoping it would climb and he bayed it in the creek..to save the pup i took care of the coon....
Letting a pup get scratched or bit by a coon could ruin it...could make em hate coon even more...but often times it is a major set back imo....why chase something that hurt you? I agree a hound gotta have some grit...but were talkin pups on first coon...and usually were talking fairly young pups...less than a year old not mature yet

shes been barking her head off at the coon in the cage. shes treed one with another dog. and when i go hunting with older dogs i take her and we shoot the smallers coons out to her and she tears them up to
Don't show her the coon anymore if have already. Best way I've done it and I've done it all kinds of ways! Take coon in a hour or 2 before dark. Set it a hundred or 200 or maybe even further in the woods on edge of a creek. Set it according to how far the pup will go. Go in at dark. Cut coon loose. Carry cage back to truck. Get dog out and send it down to where Coon was. This way it don't associate cage with coon. It will be about like the real thing.

when she treed with him she didnt bark much. but that was when she was 6 months old
Treeing will come in time just because you turn a coon loose and the pup runs it. does not mean it's going to just start treeing. i would just keep hunting the pup with other dogs some and by it self were you know it will hit some hot tracks. if the pup has it in her then it will come out in time. just keep in mind not all pups start early. good luck

Never seen one at 4-5 months old do it. May've been some though. But I've got a english female that was treeing with Old dogs and treeing turn out coons at 7&1/2 months old. But lots of time spent with her.
The only thing I would suggest is be careful. Big Bad Ring Tail could make a pup run a LONG way backwards if you know what I mean.

The one I have now would put the hammer down on a caged coon at 3 months old! I turned one out to her at 7 months. She treed it. At 8 months she treeing them alone with no help off feeders. At 11 months she's went backwards and loves to run track. So now. She's resting a couple weeks. I don't know if that's the right thing to do or not. Never had one doing what she is at this age. Anyhow its turkey season and I don't think a little lay up time can hurt her.

A older man I hunt with always tells me this, when things don't go good or old coon smokes them.

I stepped back and thought. What the heck am I doing. She's a baby. Most importantly. Her mind is a baby. I hope she matures enough in a few weeks to get back with it. Only time will tell.__________________

thats what i mean. they cant do it in the middle of night. only when its hanging right above them where they can see it
how many coon have you showed them???
if more than a few, i'd suggest to stop showing them coon...
they gotta learn to run it by scent as they will rarely if ever SEE a coon they are hunting in the wild...
usually 1 or 2 caged coons and that is ALL they need to see or get to see with me...but i dont start working them till they are showing signs of being mature enough...current pup was 9 months old...
showed him a caged coon..let him run it a short ways and let him tree it...knocked it out dead to him...took him to the woods a few nites later and got him on a smokin hot track and he treed it...been treeing coon alone ever since...be a year old in about a week...last nite he got so deep i was slightly lost for a few minutes on the walk out! ive NEVER had a dog get that deep in there....he stayed treed a good 15mins while i was walking into him too...real happy with him..
show them too many coon and they dont wanna run or tree anything they cant see...they get used to seeing it..hearing it snarl at them etc...

yea i know if you show them a caged coon to much they start to think you suple the coon and then they wont leave your side in the woods
