limes,anaplasmosis & other tick disease question

I have a question for anybody thats had a hound get limes,anaplasma or any other of the tick diseases. I just had a dog go down with anaplasmosis the vet told me he may never be the same dog, does anybody know if this is true or not from expierence?

I DONT KNOW ABOUT THE DOGS ,BUT ID LIKE TO TELL ALL OF YOUS THIS ,IF YOU GET A TICK BITE ON YOUR SELF AND IT GETS TO LOOKIN LIKE A BULLSEYE ON A TARGET OR GETS INFECTED IN ANY WAY ,,GO TO YOUR DOCTOR AND GET TREATED ,,,I PUT OFF GOIN TO THE DOCTER,I HAD A BULLS EYE ON MY CHEST ,I NOW HAVE LIMES DISEAISE , ANAPLASMOSIS,AND HAD ROCKY MOUNTAIN SPOTED FEVER ALL AT THE SAME TIME ,,YOU NEVER GET OVER ANY OF IT AND YOU WILL FEEL THE WORST THAT YOU HAVE EVER FELT IN YOUR LIFE,,I JUST WANTED TO PASS ON THIS INFO TO ALL OF YOUS BE AWARE OF TICK BITES ,,,HAVE A BLESSED ONE ,,,RON

Iv heard its very painful and never really goes away. I was given doxycycline and told to give it to the dog for 3 weeks. I hunt the dog regularly ( at least 4 nights a week before this happened and wanna know if ill ever be able to hunt him like that again, or if there immune sysytem is ever able to handle it again?

I just got the news today that my hound has Lymes Disease.I am supposed to (according to the vet) give him 6 doxycycline pills a day for 14 days and then have him evaluated.I mentioned something about "not" hunting him and the vet said to treat him for a couple of days and "if" he acts like his old self to go ahead and hunt him.So, I don't know if that was encouraging talk or if they can actually turn around that quickly.The vet said he would get over it but he "could" have a relapse someday on down the road.Weeks or months.And yes he was in great pain before we started treating him for the tick disease.

I used those collars and my fiance told me to stop useing them. She said when the kids pet the dogs the chemicals on those collars can harm the kids. Is that true or BS?

I can't speak for the other tick diseases, but I had a dog diagnosed with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever a few years ago. I've always had my doubts that's what it really was because it happened to the hound I mostly keep inside, and I had one other dog with much milder similar symptoms at the same time. This was soon before I went to UKC World one year, and both had eaten some Moist N' Meaty food packets (which I don't normally feed) so I almost feel like it was something to do with that.

At any rate, one of the two dogs got so sick in a matter of a day that I had to take him to the emergency clinic. They determined that he had Rocky Mtn, and he had to take antibiotics for almost a month. He did end up almost totally losing his voice for a few weeks. It doesn't seem to have been permanently affected though, no loss in volume or anything once it came back. The only difference I see in him is he doesn't tolerate heat as well as he did before he got sick. It was a real ordeal...I even took this dog to work with me while he was sick so I could take care of him around the clock. I hope we never have it happen again because I was scared to death I was going to lose my little buddy! I even watered him with a huge syringe and fed him soft food by spoon when he was in the worst shape. I didn't have a choice, I had to keep him nourished.

Since then I've had Rocky Mountain myself, and it was definitely no fun. I had pulled a tick off after I'd gone hunting, and that bite was the only one I've ever had that really hurt, looked bad, and wouldn't heal. Probably a week after the bite I just got SICK...so sick I went to the doctor after a day and a half, and I literally never go. I could only afford to miss two days of work, but it took me a good month to recover completely. Like the dog, for several weeks I just couldn't do much at all without being exhausted quickly. Please be sure to use a spray before you go to the woods! I'm fairly young and healthy, but someone older or with an already surpressed immune system could have really been in trouble with what I had. The other diseases they can carry are just as bad or worse in some cases.

Good luck with your hound. Just make sure he takes ALL of the medicine the vet gave you, and that you help him stay hydrated and get some food in him if he isn't wanting to eat or drink. I wouldn't give up hope that he will still be able to perform normally again!
