-- Hunt situation? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=494130)
Hunt situation?
Dogs a,b,and c tree to the right. Dog d trees across the creek about 200 yards to the left. Cast starts to the tree and the judge tell handler of dog d to go handle his dog and to tie it up. When they get done scoring there tree they will be over to score his. While shining the first tree dog d and handler come walking in. Said his dog was in a hole go ahead and circle it. How should this be properly scored? Minused or Scratched? This dog was scratched.
scratched
That would be the correct call, scratch dog D. Why? Because when a dog is declared treed, it must be scored by the judge or cast. You can't just take the dog and walk away saying circle it, for all the others know, it was under a possum.

Thanks for the ifo guys. This happened to a friend of mine, he was the judge. He called me and asked if he did the rite thing and i told him yes, but i wasnt 100% sure.
DEFINATELY SCRATCHED!!! BUT WHAT ABOUT THE JUDGE SENDING A LONE HANDLER TO A SPLIT??? I KNOW IT HAPPENS AND USUALLY THERE'S NO PROBLEM, AND I KNOW THE TEMPTATION FOR A DOG TO PULL WITH ALL THAT NOISE, BUT THE RULES SAY CAST SHOULD STAY TOGETHER!!!
quote:rules say if all dogs are treed you can go handel your dog also.... you do not have to have anyone go with you

I KNOW YOU CAN, BUT CAN A JUDGE MAKE YOU???
11. HANDLERS AND JUDGES:
No trees to be climbed or cut. No coon to be killed. Where dogs split up
Judge will go with handler to the dog that trees first. If a split tree is obvious
(Judge’s decision), split tree must be declared. Separate time must
be kept on each tree unless all dogs are declared treed. Permission will
be given for other handlers to go to their dogs on split tree; otherwise cast
must remain together unless time out is called. Split tree cannot be shined
until Judge arrives.

SO, 'PERMISSION GIVEN', MEANS HANDLER'S DISCRETION, NOT JUDGES???
yes you can decide not to go handle your dog if you choose... have no clue why you wouldnt tho
I would think so, but I'd say most folks would want to go tie their dog while the squaller is gettin blowed. At the distance described in this situation, I don't see why dog D couldn't have been handled, and then handler of dog D came back to A,B,C's tree to be scored.

AS JIM SAID, NOONE KNOWS WHAT THAT DOG HAD TREED; POSSUM, SLICK, ETC.!!! WELL IF YOU GO TO A SPLIT AND WAIT, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT WAS IN THE OTHER DOGS' TREE EITHER!!! WORKS OUT BETTER IF EVERYBODY JUST STAYS TOGETHER!!!
