Wisconsin Hunting???

So... it looks like my career will be moving me to Waukesha, WI. Any coon hunters in that area? How's the hunting, and what's it like to find land to hunt??? I see a lot of state land (conservancy) on the map... is that land open to hunters?

Thanks for any thoughts!
David Schmidt

the state land has a down time during the nesting season. and opens back up the first week of july. don't know how easy it is to find private ground because i'm not in that area. but i do know there is a few coon hunters up there. it should be flat ground and some wet marshy ground.

Thanks Dan Dogs... so the ground I see listed as State "Conservancy" is open to the public for hunting, but with some restrictions for running season?

If so, that's awesome, because theres several hundred acres behind a piece of property I'm looking at!

waukesha

Depends on where you are but you are going to run into many many owners of small parcels of land that think they own and control the whole world, but with that in mind there is a lot of good hunting low competition, except for trappers and relatively easy going country. Wisconsin has a leash law in were government land a dog has to be on a eight foot or shorter during spring/early summer. Also forgot about traffic, your gonna see a lot of it and in a hurry

Depends what your used to hunting. There will be alot of blacktop. And lots of people. The State land there is real wet and the leash law will shut you down for a while. I live 30-min from Waukesha. Forget about finding something close that would be big enough to turn a cast loose in and keep em safe without driving an hour.....................Jon

Check out Hwy 83 South of Genessee Depot and South of Mukwonago. Probably 15 - 20 min. away, alot of nice oak ridges in the area. Plenty of back roads to drive around and find some spots to ask permission.

Thanks Stewart! I'll be up there for awhile working, before I move the family, and I'll check that area out.

Scott - not sure about Season III, and this change sort of throws a monkey wrench into the works.

Jimmy - thanks for the invite, I will take you up on it, as soon as I get in the area.

Thanks!
Dave

I'm gonna be checking out that area myself. I live about a half hour south of there where it's small pieces of land and lots of 55 mph roads. Always looking for a hunting buddy. My husband works alot so I am the one to run the dogs. Going alone when he is out of town and no one else would know where to find me is a little unsettling.

Shoot... We barely have any rocks around here, much less hills!

Posted by deschmidt27 on 06-16-2012 03:51 PM:

OK... so it took longer than expected but I'm getting settled in. And it looks like I can move out of my temporary apartment, the end of July, when I close on a house up by Ashippun.

I know it's hot and dry, but if anyone is still hitting the woods and doesn't mind me tagging along, I'd love to join you. I won't move my dogs until I close on the house, but I'm just sitting up there every week until I can get back home on the weekends.

Thanks!

Dave
Your moving into Dodge County, not bad hunting around here. Your on the south end and I'm on the north end of the County. We can hunt if you would like, I have a good spot I like to take pups to plenty of coon and really no roads unless they get deep.

Give me a call 920-210-5246
We need some rain though it's dry!!

Wisconsin Hunting

I'm from southern wisconsin and the hunting here is awesome. I would say that it is pretty easy to find hunting land down here as long as you try to stay out of where you are not suppose to be. We are coon hunting after all and coon are not something people want around, so finding land is not that hard.

Jay,
Got room for a third wheel? I have a Lep pup I'd like to thru into some off color dogs.
You still in the same house?
Scott

I need to borrow a couple of kids. I got kicked out of a bunch of spots because of the deer hunters, and another because I wasn't killing enough coon.

Scott, you got a Lep pup? Where did you get it? A guy I used to rope with had a Lep, hell on coon! Did not say anything on track, treed alittle but if one hit the ground or he could catch one look out! His girlfriend took the dog when she left him..

I got her from Lamar Meeks last Aug. Her name is Uni. She's a red merle. I haven't had neither dog out in about two months.
Uni will get after a ground coon. She hasn't struck on track or tree yet. She'll be a year old in July.

Josh,
Hows that pup doing I foolishy passed on?

Scott
