are pups ready to start
we have a5mo old & 7mo old black &tan pups there runing cats on the farm but dont show much intrest in cage coon should we keep trying how often or try something else these are our first coon hounds
They are still young, if they show no interest in a caged coon wait a month or two and then show them another one. Get some coon scent and lay drags with them and sometimes it help to just walk them in the timber. Work on commands and loading them right now. Don't get in a hurry for them to start, it will come you just need to have some patience with them. If you got someone around you with a good older hound see if they will let you take your pups along, although they may not do much it can help.

a caged coon to a pup is standing its ground. the reason they started chasing the cats is because the cats run from them. its just like a school bully, they wont mess with the kids that dont run and stand thier ground. if you let the coon run from them they will chase it too. just use a small coon,5 &7 mths is kinda young for them to catch one. first couple let them see it run off till its out of sight, then go with them to go after it. makes them braver , just like when you put a older dog that will bark and raise hell on a caged coon with the pup. they get alot more brave towards the coon. the ONLY thing a coon in a cage is good for is to turn it loose for the dog. you cant teach one anything good towards actually having the dog tree a coon in real conditions with a coon in a cage.. most people cause faults in the dog trying to use them. putting a coon up a tree in a cage or dragging it around should only be done at a last resort effort. you dont teach a pup how to run track or how to tree. you or another dog only teach it WHAT to run and tree by exposing it to coon..

I knew an old black and tan (about 10 years old) who was all coonhound, but could care less about a coon in a cage...
