Dog Fencing

I'm looking for some input.

I would like to build a fenced in area for my dogs to run around and play in during the day. But, honestly, I don't know where to start. So I'm hoping some some of you can maybe offer some advice and ideas. Pics of your own similar setups would be nice too!

I basically want a big pen, I'm thinking at least 20x30ft. I can go as big as I want though.

It cannot be permanent. I want to be able to move it or take it apart later on.

Has to be 5-6ft high to help prevent one jumping out.

Has to be sturdy/stable.

All I can come up with is buying kennel panels and attaching them together.
I have noticed that Tractor Supply carries 16-ft long fence panels in a variety of styles, but I'm not sure if those would be sturdy enough to hold dogs in.

I'm open for ideas, any and all!!

IMO it is a pain having the dogs in a pen like this. If they are not climbing out, they are digging holes to china and making the yard a mess. What I do that makes it easier is that the majority of the time I have the dogs in welded wire and on concrete. When its nice and I am home I tie them out on 20 foot chains for the day. They seem to like to roll in the grass.

For years when I was younger I always thought that a dog would want to be more "free" than in the kennel or tied all day, when in reality when they were free all they did was lay in their dog house anyway.

I have tried both concrete and dirt pens. Dirt is definatly not the way to go imo. All the dogs will do is dig all day and prolly get out also you have more problems with fleas ticks and worms and your dogs stay filthy all the time. I keep my dogs in 8' x 20' concrete pens made out of the 6' tall chain link panels. works great , dogs stay clean and healthy. And like the other fella said. You can give em the whole yard but all they are gonna do is lay around all day. Plus mine get all the runnin they need at nite. lol

Laura, have you thought about the invisible fence setup? That's probably the way to go.

If you want to be able to move it, you could just put the wire on the ground but you'd want to staple it down or something to keep the mower from beating it up. Or you could try the wireless setup.

I have a buddy that installs them. They use the Innotek. It'll contain even the most stubborn dogs. I sent you a pm with more info on it.

T post's cheap welded wire or chain link. Then a good hot wire at top and bottom. I wouldn't leave my dogs in a pin with out a hot wire unless it had a cement bottom and some kind of top over it. They will dig out or go over. If you put the top elec wire about a foot over the top of the fence they won't go over. So you can get away with a shorter fence. It will give them respect of there fence and doesn't bother them in the woods. They are use to the elec. fence and don't freek out when they get hit.
My pup got hit by one the other night that was really hot. He ran back and I kept going. He went down a wase and jumped the fence. It was like most elec. fences in the country. Only about 3 ft. high and no problem for him.

ok. my backyard is fenced..maybe 1/8-1/4 acre. I used the cattle wire and landscape timbers as the post. it has been up for 8-9 yrs. never had one to get out of it. I have a fence (4x4 & 2x4) along the front and used the plastic lattice. that presents a problem after years of sun and cold makes it brittle. Bandit was the only one that every got out and he pushed out the underpinning next to the wood fence. I now have the 2x4 welded wire on the inside of the wood fence so dont have to worry about them jumping on the panels. I was keeping a B&T for someone and the lil girl climb the fence and jumped out. but none of mine have every gotten over it. it is 4ft high.

my pens are on dirt and some have the concrete blocks laid in them over repeat hole digging. only have problems with digging with 1 or 2 and worse when they are younger.

as far as fleas/ticks, never had a problem unless the season is bad...as it is this year for ticks so far.

I have all chain link pens with one that is made out of the hog panels from TSC with the green posts and and timbers. I have used the panels inside the pens where some of the dogs will try to push open the chain link.

I have a dog yard with t posts and 5 foot kennel wire with a single strand of electric near the bottom, they have never tried to get out cuz they are to busy playing. We can change or move it with ease. You can buy the rolled wire, clips and t-posts at fleet farm or menards.

find some 10ft pallets with 4-4 in it free. get some chicken wire
about 125 and dont worry about it.

Here is a picture of my fencing.. Off to the right of the picture is the kennels.. the fencing runs right into it.. Hotwire the top and bottom.. At first I didn't have it hotwired and I had dogs go over it.. The bottom strand was basically to keep them back off the fence.. They won't touch it..

I have crushed granite down with a light layer of pea gravel over the top of it.. It does not get muddy and it easy to clean up..

And I can still separate everyone in their kennels if I choose to.. Other then that I just let them pick which dog house they want.. My younger dogs are always out in the yard playing.. Haven't had much issues with digging.. One female will dig if there is a spot that is higher then the rest.. If it is level, she leaves it alone..

This side is hotwired up where the horse is also.. She thinks she is a dog and leans over from her side

Thanks for the replies!!

This has definitely helped me get a feel for what a can use. The only thing I could come up with was Kennel Panels attached together, because who can't use more of those but that's a pricey way to go.

For the most part, they'd only be in it while I'm around, so I shouldn't have to worry about them digging out, hopefully....

I appreciate the Pic, Melanie! Beautiful horse, and Walker!!

I'm still open for ideas, I've got a plan forming, but it can always be changed!

Underground fence. This is the way to go as long as you are around when you are using it and spend a good deal of time with the dogs teaching them to use it. I have had a few, disadvantages are:

#1 if the batteries go in the collars, the dogs go with them
#2 if you set up a loop thats a half acre and get a break in it be ready to search the entire length of the wire to find the break and get it fixed
#3 If the wire does break your fence is useless till its fixed so you have to have an alternative system to keep them contained
#4 make the wire very smooth with no bumps or "dents" in the loop. IF the dog feel like it can get out even for a split second because of a delay in feeling the collar they will break for it and be gone.

Its literally amazing how quick the dog realizes that the fence is off or the collar is broken. Just like with shocking systems different dogs have different tolerances. I had to use "stubborn dog collars on mine and still had a few incidences, and it only takes once for them to do damage or get smashed on the road. Many of these systems are made to contain a much smaller or less willful dog than a hound. If you want to leave them in for a long time you have to be aware of their necks and make sure the collars don't start digging into them.

another disadvantage: keeps your dog in but lets others in.
