the switch works pretty good. i don't like to shock one on the tree to much. i give a good correcting and tell them slick tree. bout the same in my book. ain't no coon in the tree. just worse in a nite hunt as its a quick ride home for me.
IVE TREED 6 POSSUMS IN ABOUT AS MANY YEARS BUT A GOOD SWITCHING IS THE BEST THING FOR IT IF YOUR PUP IS TREEING CONSISTANTLY IT WONT HURT HIM NONE
if a pup has the light switched turned on and has treed a fair number of coon and is doing a nice job he aughta have the brains to know that aint no dang coon up that tree....if he dont, i will teach him...they usually learn....but, if they are turned on and doing well, they are ready to start learning slick trees and off game is bad....
ive seen a ton of possum the last week or 2....knock on wood but my youngun hasnt treed any...ran a coon track right under one...another i accidently chased towards him..i didnt know he was hunting on the other side of the knoll of the hill...that possum sounded like an elephant..heading right for the dog...i said ohhh boy he is gunna tree this one......nope...ran up the creek bed and struck a coon track...never barked or chased the grinner...if he did he was fixin to learn a lesson...
dogs gotta learn lessons or it just creates bad habits that are tough to impossible to break later...often they know they did bad and snapping a leash on them and dragging them off the tree and telling them NO! BAD! is enough...but the dogs i hunt are around people all day and know english and human actions better than some people do...they can tell when im mad...they can tell when they done good...correct em right the first time and life is much easier later on...

I tree several possums, but I let my dogs tree whatever they want to tree. I don't have many folks that want to hunt with me. lol.

tonight my dogs treed three and killed one on the ground. i managed to save two. after shaking them out one went up another tree and i called the dogs off. the second one i shock out i pulled it away from them and took it to the truck and released it when they weren't looking. i used to kill all they treed but i grew sensitive to watching them die for no reason. i let my dogs run every thing but deer.

wbond, wanna share this 100% method???
some guys knock the grinner or other off game out and discipline the dog one way or another....
personally i dont like that...if a dog got the brains to run and tree a coon it dang well better be able to smell the difference between the off game and a coon...i rather educate them without knocking it down to them...
i do agree its hard to break them if they never see them.....but at the same time, i think if you can get em started and "straight" they arent likely to be trashy and if they are, it is easier to break em...
im lucky to be in fairly thick coon...when starting a youngun i can pretty much walk them to a hot coon trail before i cut em loose....i also avoid fields for a long while unless its fall and im in corn fields...
my current pup, i cant say he is straight and broke...he has never chased anything but a coon...but he doesnt know to chase anything but coon...the other nite i chased a possum right to him on accident..he didnt mess with it..he HAD to hear it running infront of him...it sounded like an elephant...also had him run track right past a possum in a tree...didnt bother it...
possum and porcupines and skunks are pretty dang tough...a dog often bumps into them and they are slow moving and a dogs natural response is to chase something that hobbles off from it....deer are the same way...often times they will run a deer by sight in the fields which is why i try to avoid fields till the dog is on coon good...
fox and coyote...seems hit or miss...some dogs will burn em and others seem to never do it...
dogs are just dogs...gotta be educated...but at the same time i think its easier to get em straight on coon good in the first place...seems to lessen the odds of them ever being trashy..and if they do it seems easier to break em...they are older and know they love to tree coon...
if i ever do have to educate a dog i also make every effort to get em a coon and let em know they did good and thats what they are supposed to do...i always like to end the nite on a good note...not a bad education for the dog...some guys like to teach a good lesson and put em up for the nite or the week or longer....

I don't like to shock one at the tree or shoot one out and shock them. I simply scold them and walk away. Thereafter, I go to work on them. The best sure method is to drive around on a possum night (light rain) until you see one crossing the road. Pull over and turn you dog in on the hot track. When the dog opens or show any interest, put the fire to em. Do that 2 or 3 times and they will lose interest in a possum track or tree.
