The Evolution of the Brushy Ridge hounds

A thread that I have written to showcase some of my nice hounds that ive used to persue big game and how they came about.

I first started with hounds many years ago, I was taken under the wing of a well known local houndsmen who sold me a pup in which I named Brushy Ridge Rackett, Rackett was and is a solid hound and started at a very early age on coon, then did great things as a young dog when I dedicated him to bear hunting. I developed a bond with this hound unlike no other that I had owned and we became a great team. Rackett taught me many things by hunting him that I didnt know came from many years of selective line breeding and great genetics. Rackett was and still is a incredibly loud bawl on track to steady chop on tree hound, handles like a dream, laid back but knows when its go time. He posesses a very cold nose. I hunted him and a nice pair of blueticks I had together and they made a great team as well. Little did I know that my hound was a decendant of a hound named Allegheny Racket who produced very dominant and is seen in almost every pedigree of top bear dogs in this area.He was a decendant of a well known dog, Turkey Ridge Racket. Allegheny Racket produced Rohrbaugh's Spot and Wendy and through that channel came Rohrbaugh's Driver which was the coldest nose dog I have still to this day ever hunted with. I researched as much as I could and learned great things about this bloodline and how beneficial it had been to many people. It was also being very kind to me and treeing me alot of game. But that wasnt all, Rackett's mother, Lilly also came from an outstanding reproducer that was well known GRNITECH GRCH 'PR' West Virginia Faith owned by Lee Ours. Faith was off Perk's Northern Cujo whom was off, Turkey Ridge Racket. It wasnt until about a year later I purchased a nice pair of pups off another local cross from two very well known bear hounds at the time that and this was cross number 2. The first cross was excellent so it was made again. I named those pups, Evans' Moonshine Katie and Evans' Brushy Ridge Storm. Both of these hounds started the same as my Rackett dog had at a very early age and showed incredible intelligence. I knew I wanted pups from these outstanding females. When I received the 6 generation pedigree from UKC I surprisingly learned that these females carried some of the same blood as Rackett. They were line bred as well and carried alot of the same stuff. After alot of thought I knew I wanted pups from these two nice females. I then bred Rackett to Storm, and produced my first litter of what I call, Brushy Ridge Hounds. From that litter, 4 well known top hounds were produced. Brushy Ridge's Blue Penny, Rohrbaugh's Dixie, Brushy Ridge Spot, and Coppertop Pepper. Two died at a young age and never had the chance to prove themselves, one owned by myself. I also lost those two outstanding females way to young, Storm to a bear, and Katie to a lighting strike in her kennel. To this day I have incorporated these hounds and line bred them to get the best results from the bloodline. I dedicate myself to my hounds and hunting them. If it wasnt for hard working houndsmen behind these hounds I wouldnt have had these hounds to work with today, I always give credit where credit is due. Rackett is 11 now and has reproduced like his ancestors before him. He still continues to produce pups like himself.

Great Post Adam.And i most say not only because iv known adam for many years. But i can say that I've hunted and hunted with these dogs for years and there solid handle very well and do the job in any conditions!!! And as well own a dog that adam had as a pup and as well seen her tree bear non stop at a young age and at the age of 5 now still putting it to the ol bear like all his dogs. I enjoy hunting with him and his dogs and plan on hunting with him and his hounds forever. Adam has really encouraged me and taught me many things about bear hunting and im sure he has plenty more to help me with.....

Thanks for all the kind words Eli, I know you've been with me many nights and helped chase these hounds around in the mountains to tree's. I only hope to keep improving these hounds through selective breeding and continue to work hard to achieve the goal I have set upon myself.


I was very fortunate to end up with Rackett, I have a video that is on VHS that Ill try to get on here of him treeing on his second coon at 4 and half months old. He was solid from then on and I was a young green hunter and he put alot of pressure on me when it came to trying to improve with my bear hounds as well as coon dogs. I hunted the hair off him and I hunted him alot! I didnt have many dogs so I took him everytime I was in the woods. He outrigged an experience pack on bear at 7 months old and was treeing bears alone at a year old with no problems at all.

I do however have a video of two nephews of his ill post on here now. These pups were very young. This seems to be a trait in each and every one of these hounds from the time there young.

I wanna give alot of credit of how these dogs got into my hands to the select hunters who bred only for themselves and gave me the opportunity to own my rackett pup, and then the two nice females that I eventually bred to him. The reason I made the cross was because it was a perfect balance of incredible tree dogs, cold nosed track dogs and grit that was never dog aggressive and I could always feed all my hounds together with no problem or issues, I was told ''if they eat together, they'll tree together.'' But the two female's possessed incredible intelligence that I cant even begin to describe. Others who have hunted with littermates and past hounds know exactly what I mean. Through that cross and channel produced exceptional pups. Two of them that are in my kennel today and top notch lead hounds. Brushy Ridge Spot, and Brushy Ridge Blue Penny, and another that was sold by a friend that was raised and trained here and sold out from underneath me on a co ownership deal. Her name was Brushy Ridge's Coppertop Pepper. I gave a pup to the guy who sold me Rackett, and she is also a top hound. Rohrbaugh's Dixie.

Thanks John, I totally agree with you. Thats always why I love raising pups out of my crosses and watching them learn and develop and see traits come out that were in there ancestors. I would love to get a hunt lined up this summer, I have two littermates to her, one has pups at the moment and produced a very very nice litter. We will have to do that for sure!

Thanks for the support Lee, you've known me since I first got started in hounds and know I always have put my full effort into it. Thanks for always helping me when I needed a hand. Im gonna keep trying to build upon what I got from you and george and keep breeding the best that I can for the future. I always give credit to Faith and she produced many many great hounds. Ill have to give you a call very soon, we are planning a similiar cross this spring but I fear it may be too tight. I have a litter on the ground now thats out of a grandson to lilly and a lightfoot and linebred hardtime rocky female that I coon hunt. If you get time please feel free to post any pics that you want of Faith or any of her pups on here. You are more than welcome to.

Ill be in touch for sure. I bred her to my Brushy Ridge Spot dog. They always seemed to be a perfect pair since I got her off Cindy. Ran together hunted together and matched up well. Spot is a really nice dog and from my very first cross. I would tie half a bear hide to my four wheeler when trhe litter was about 4 and a half months old, and put some bear scent on it then I would wait until they were milling around playing and take off up a road on my property for a ways and everytime i done this i would hear this one pup come a rollin and i figured at the time they was just chasin the four wheeler and Spot would run full steam and bail on top the hide and pull fur. I overlooked him over the years in my breeding program and only have one previous litter before this one that all turned out to be outstanding hounds. So after many bear tree's and being one of my lead dogs from such a young age. I decided to breed him to Light Foot Zeylina. I am gonna write a post in the next day or so on the light foot dogs and how they were the only bloodline that I found that pleased me that I could outcross too and line breed back upon the same dogs from both sides. I am beginning that now with this litter.

I agree with you on that, that was one of many reasons I chose them to make outcrosses with my hounds. I tried many different bloodlines and bought pups from alot of well known crosses off well known studs that just didnt suit me and wasnt what I was looking for, not that they didnt make good dogs, but they werent gonna fit into my breeding program down the road. So thats what lead me to Jess and I started trying the Light Foot line and so far they are more like my own hounds than anything ive found which works for me. Im gonna put a few of the Light Foot dogs I have on here shortly and tell some more about them and how they fit into my future.

Light Foot Blue John

I wanna thank Jonny and Cindy Thompson for getting this nice hound in my hands at a young age. They did an outstanding job with raising this litter and getting these dogs started. I got John at around 7 months old and he took off from there, I started him off on bear and he was running and treeing soon after I got him. He ran with the old dogs and impressed me and others enough that several hunters thought he was a 2 or 3 year old dog. John is an exceptional coon dog as well. I know some big game guys dont like using hounds on both, but Ive never had a problem with it due to a poor coon population to begin with. Which impressed me as well because of the tough hunting I have here. John shows alot of qualities of the Light Foot dogs, especially his sire Light Foot Dagger, and as well as the Rocky hounds from his mom, Abbey. John is a loud tree dog with alot of intelligence and with a very good nose and impressive tracking ability.

Not to shed all the spot light on John, I have had four exceptional dogs that came from Dagger all together. John's sister Light Foot Zeylina, is much like John and ran the heck out of the first bear she was put on, and did very well on the second and has developed into a top hound. She is a top notch hound and a nice houndy looking female that is easy on the eyes.
