I understand its just so many opinions concrete is easy to clean some think bad on the feet, some think a chain is a lazyman's way of keeping the dog. some swear by raised pens with 2x's spaced apart so the crap falls thru, take your pick I have mine on ext 3/4 plywood sealed with sealer every 2 or 3 years still going strong at 6 years old JMHO

Ive had dogs on chain,,,concrete,,and raised wooden floor kennels that i prefer,,,,easy to wash out,,,less or no flea problems and less problems with intestinal parasites. ......just one mans opinion

we have had dogs on all the above...we now have them kenneled. cement inside the building, they have a 4 by 7 area inside, they can go out to a 6 by 10 dog run outside with "trap rock", and i let them out everyday into an acre fenced in area. they kennel broke themselves to only wanting to do their business out in the dirt. i feed less dog food now and they stay in good shape....they are happy and satisfied.

Alot of people seem to really like the raised wood kennels but i absolutely HATE them. I tried putting dogs on wood and it stinks to high heaven. It is hard to keep clean due to the dogs poop getting stuck between the boards. The urine soaks into the wood after the sealer wears a little and then your stuck with that pleasant smell every day. I prefer concrete. Throw a stall mat in there if your worried about their feet. I also like a long chain about 15ft or so if you want to move them off the concrete every now and then.

I'm planing on building my new kennel this summer and will be using pea gravel in a raised system kinda like a drain field. So all the spoils that doesnt get scooped out can drain through the pea gravel and out of the kennel runs.

i have my dogs in kennels with concrete floor because i live in town & im worryed about neighbors complaining.i would rather have them on 10ft chain with lime base.a 10ft chain gives them 20ft any direction plus dragging chain & pulling against it gives even more exercise.to people who dont know anybetter a dog on a chain looks neglected.

my wood floors were wolmanized treated id pick out the aged ones if possible,,,,never did any other treatment to them....just wash them down and leave enuff crack to wash what i dint scrape up. id shovel the piles then wash the pens out,,,,twice a month wash with soap and when i cleaned water bucket out with bleach id spread that out on the floors, then wash down.. once a month rake out from underneath and haul that off to...... never had anyone close complain of smell....

well my family has been coon hunters for idk how many years and there freinds and dirt id the best for a hound concrete manks there joints bad and in older dogs cripple them up and gravel that be hard to do any cleaning up in and when there on wood there nails grow like crazy and you want a hound to have healthy feat i mostly keep mine in keneels on dirt and there doing fine i got one wood pin for puppy litters untill there a few weeks and thats it for the wood

I've got a 12X31 pole barn framed at the bottom with 2X12s.Inside the 2X12s I've got a base of #3 stone covered with 5" of quarry sand the sand and the rock act as a filter bed.Very easy to keep clean only down side is your dogs always feel grity to touch them because of laying in the sand.

Me too, they don't stink like concrete plus I never shovel them out. The turds just disapear. My ground pens are 20 X 20 feet and I never put more than three dogs in one pen. I was a kennel boy for a vet years ago. I would shovel the piles and incinerate it and just wash down the smears and that concrete would still get to stinking in summer. Too much work and too much smell.

I rotate them around unless in heat or with pups.

Elevated kennels can't be beat for cleanliness and keeping the bugs off em' .... next to that , fresh dirt .

I absolutely love pea gravel in the summer, but once the snow flies it gets near impossible to keep clean. I think the hralthiest way to keep a dog is on a twenty to thirty foot cable with a three foot chain runner. I make the set up on a slight incline the dog house and a bit of grabel go at the uphill side. Also the food and water dishes go by the house. The dogs figire out to go to the bathroom at the far end of the run as far from the house as possible. But come winter aroind my house the dogs all go into kennels. I am building a new one with raised wood runs. I habe liked what I have seen with those and think it is a good option for me on the winter.

Mines outta wood about two foot off the ground very easy to clean.never smells.my friend has one outta concrete and his stinks so bad you cant breath.

I have had my dogs on concrete for the last 25 years, but I have set up a long cable in the yard at times. Push to shove, my dogs much preferred the chain and cable over the kennel. They would get all excited when put out.

Forget the human notion of a chain being inferior ... it is only a human notion that doesn't matter at all to dogs despite what animal rights groups say.

Oh the reason for kennels is that typically for females they are better for the obvious reasons.
