OT...pinched nerve

Have any of you guys ever had to deal with a pinched nerve in the lower spine? I have one pinched between my lower last two discs, and it makes my right leg go numb and is very painful. If anyone has delt with it, what solutions is there out there? The doc gave me the option of an epideral injection to separate the discs under xray to let the nerve back out or possible back surgery. Im 23 years old and DO NOT want to have back surgery if I dont have to? Any help or info would be very appreciated.

Ok, thank you ill give that a try for sure. I know what you mean about the taking medicine to just be able to function lol. The only time it stops hurting is when im asleep.

Have you had an MRI to determine exactly the cause. If so, make sure you tell the chiropractor so that he will not do more damage...

Pills did nothing for my pain, the only relief I got was sitting or lying.

All cases are not the same, but a Steroid Injection to block the pain helped mine, but it took 2. It's been a month and one half since the last injection. I still have a dull back pain, but I do not have the unbearable pain shooting down my leg.

I would go for the injection first, then chiropractor, then as a last resort... surgery.

pinched nerves

im 29 and ive been having since i was 25.the best thing u can do is hang from a bar and bring ur feet up to ur waist for about as long as u can hold them up there.believe me!it will help with ur lower back and minimize the pain too.goodluck

Posted by CodyHarness on 03-12-2012 06:56 PM:

Thanks guys.. Ill give it all a try.. I did have an mri a couple weeks ago, it costed me 800$$ with my insurance lol. Im trying to steer clear of those doctors now if i can. Nice to know the Foodlion warehouse ruined my back then laid me off for good lol.

Posted by buffaloriver on 03-12-2012 06:59 PM:

the stretching and hanging from a bar does the same thing as the machine the chiropractor will put you on but it is more effective and you see faster results I do the stretches when it starts to bother me now

I have had back issues since I was in my late teens. I have the same condition that my Mom has and she has had the surgeries. I was a regular at the chiropracter from my late twenties until my late 40's. In the last 4+ years I have been doing crunches and sit ups to strengthen my ab muscles. I generally get some nice easy lower back stretches in, too. I haven't seen the chiropractor in the last 2 years. I am a regular in the gym and coon hunt 4 to 6 days a week. Yea, I've abused my body but at the age of 56 I found the key to a stronger back....is a stronger stomach.

lots of ice, and the leg with the pain or numbness, pull your knee up toward your chest and sleep on the other side.

I am twenty six, when i was twenty two i had the same thing my l4 l5 disc and l5 s1 disc was pinching my nerve and making my butt hamstring and feet numb! I did chiropractor, epideral series of three injections, and finally back surgery! Surgery fixed it the others were a waste of a thousand dollars. If i were to do it again i would have tried traction, "EX: hanging upside down relieving the pressure on your discs.:"
I messed up my back four years after surgery and am about to go through the process again. It is very painful and frustrating. It sucks to have to work for a living!! It is expensive and if i could afford another back surgery i would do it again in a minute to stop the pain. I should have enough money to have it done again in October!!

I have first hand experence with this my friend. About 4 years ago i went to a ortopedic specialist because my regular doctor couldnt figure out why my leg was numb and having lower back pain. Well after a MRI the secialist showed me the problem a huge herniated disc.

She said surgery was and option but did not reccomend it because all it did was cut off part of the disc and later I would still have trouble with it. That all surgery does is stop the pain it does not fix the disc..

So she put me on cortisteriods and within a 4 days i was feeling pretty good. For about 6 months I had to go back and take several rounds of these steriods to treat my flareups.

To now im back hunting and playing sports. Am I 100% no im not but she did say that disc will heal itself as long as it doesnt rupture.. It may take a long time but it does heal..

The biggest thing to remember is use ICE ICE ICE ICE ICE!!!!
NO HEAT!!! HEat causes inflamtion witch is what you are trying to get down And as hard as it is stay active when it hurts DO NOT lay up long walk as far as you can stand even if its a couple of steps.

ITs up to you on the surgery tho. Everybody is different. I chose to fight the pain and i am getting better every day. I tried the epidural steriod injections and i will be honest THEY HURT LIKE HELL!!!! And i have an extreme tolerence for pain.

If you would like to talk about this with someone who has been in your shoes feel free to call me. I know its hard I have been there. I walked with a walker for 2 weeks from pain..

I do have a question for you all.. I dont know which exactly to ice down lol. The leg or back.. My back has stopped hurting, but the leg never stops. And also, did you all just do steriod injections or the epideral injections?? Or are they the same thing? Im almost desperate..I just lost my insurance with food lion so im defiantely trying to go the less expensive way if possible. Thank you all for the help so far..

Epideral is area where the nerve is pinched.
Steriod is the medication.

The injection is not cheap. Chiropractor treatements maybe the best option for you.

I am 36 and deal with it on a regular basis and been that way since I was a young teen. My left leg hurts so bad at times it feels like it is on fire and my back will not even be hurting, but about once a year my back does get bad and I am in the bed for a week and sometimes even longer. Nothing seems to help it for good and I have already did everything we have read on this thread. I guess the doc will have to try to fix it some day but not sure I am ready.

Good luck Cody cause I feel your pain.

I took oral cortisteriods (predinsone) comes in a pack and you take as directed for 7 days. I also had the epidural steriod injections witch were exspensive and hurt like hell.

As far as ice goes put in on the lower part of your back where your waistband would be and let it sit for 20 mins at the time every hour. I have tried several chiro's and none seem to help. But it is worth a try tho can be exspensive too.

The steriod dose pack by far helped me the most. And the fastest.

If anyone needs to have lower back surgery make sure you check out the newest and best surgery for that area. It is called the XLIF surgery. They go thru your side not back with a small cut. But all doctors can not do this. We have a great one in Charleston SC. My wife had the surgery last week and doing great. If I can help just reply for info. You can also go on line and pull up the info on the XLIF.
