find a comfortable spot & wait him out dont let him sit or stand by you.he will eventually get bored & go out & stir up some trouble.may take a few times.

All good suggestions so far, but I would try to pick a spot that the young dog can strike a track in under a 1/4 mile. Then as the dogs gets it you can go to spots with further distances.

If you want him to go farther, keep sendin him back in. On a stubborn one, I usually find that they have more patients than me. Which is very little.

the quickest way to get a dog to hunt by hisself is to walk them, i walk em up and down creeks were i think a coon might be. after they get after a couple of coons and tree them, if a dog has got any hunt in him at all they should start going by theirself. i use to hunt with a old man that had a coon treeing machine for a dog. he would have to break a small limb off full of leaves and switch her, nothing hard just mostly made a lot of rackett, and when he turned her loose she would flat knock a hole in the dark. that ole man told me , i want her to know that the conditions out younder are better than the conditions here at my feet lol. the dog wasnt scared of him at all, i reckon she thought that was a part of being turned loose, and when we were ready to leave all he had to do was holler for her and she would be right back at his feet ready to load up.
