at the tree

Just looking for some tips on how to get a dog to stay at the tree.
My pup is 9 months and I let her see a coon in a cage today!! she loved it !! went crazy. so I pulled it up the tree and let her keep howling at it. then I let the coon go (let it get a head start) and let her go she tracked it right to the tree and stayed there for about a minute, then she starts to look around like she is questioning that there is a coon in the tree. She did keep going back and howling.

Should I tie her to the tree for a while to let her know to stay there?

Any help is appreciated

you dont wanna keep showing a dog a coon because it will want to hunt by sight...which is not conducive to coon hunting...they need to learn to track by their nose and ONLY their nose...keep showing it coon and it will lead to troubles...

usually only takes 1 caged coon and its time to head to the woods in the dark...

the pup im working now i showed him 1 caged coon...took him for a walk at nite and he treed a coon..been on the hunt ever since..

if they dont work the caged coon well i put em up another few months and try again...or if i run into them not coming on good in the woods i'll give em some time and show them another caged coon and back to the woods...

if they dont get it with 2 tries, somethin is wrong...usually 1 is all it takes..

You want it to smell it , not see it.

like posted earlier they will look for the cage up in the tree and not use their nose

I get it thanks for that info. so what about the leaving the tree just tie her there and she will learn to stay? should I praise her while she is there?

Yes if the tree is good pet her..praise her...give her a treat...give her the coon...whatever it takes to let the dog know she done good...but younguns i will pet and praise and squall etc and get them all fired up if they done good...i'll spend 10 mins or so working with them till the get the idea...

Its somewhat natural for new dogs not to have that confidence to lock down treed...that comes with time and expirience...sometimes you gottta stick real close to the dog and "talk it into treeing"...lighted collars are helpful...you can see when they are lookin up..then you can shine the tree and if its good you can help them out before they leave...

First thing i do when i get to a tree is snap a leash on them...they gotta learn to stay if they picked that tree...if its bad we'll work on that later...but teaching a dog to leave trees can lead to problems as well...usually easier to tie them to a bad tree and lead them away from it then to try to get them to leave a bad tree and finish the track...you get to sending them off bad trees in the beginning and you run a risk of confusing the heck outta them...
