grade hunts .
what happened to the grade hunts of the 60s and 70s .on fri nites . and club officers getting fur buyers to come to them wen coon r n season ? grade hunts use to draw alot of hounds .
not any titles/hardware on the line for the newbys to hunt for..
i think they can have them if you get enough people to sign up for one ,,but most of the old timers are dead or too crippled up to have a old fashion coondog hunt, most people are interested in getting them titles so they can brag on their nitehunt dog..
you should have been with us when we hunted in the snowstorm last week,,
dogs did a good job ,too bad the coons had holed up on us,lol

wouldn't be awful for some clubs to offer a grade hunt as a side hunt for some on the same night of a nite hunt, thats the way they used to do alot around here......many registered dogs have been hunted in grade hunts as well

I can't think of enough grade dogs around here, that could tree a coon, to make up one cast. I suspect it is that way about everywhere anymore. Hardly anyone keeps a grade dog these days.
Any club can have them anytime they want to schedule them.

my first hunt was a grade hunt won first place dog was a registered blue tick that was given to me the guy i got him from said i could have his papers if i made him a coondog needless to say i did get his papers and he was a great coondog all this in 1974 when hunts were 3 hours you didn't have to win cast to place in a hunt today 2 hours and must win cast to place 2 or 3 cast at local level you could come in 1000+ but if you don't win your cast you come home with no points and they wonder why no one shows up !!!
quote:As stated above, plus most clubs can't afford the loss of guides and judges to have grade casts even if they did come to hunt.

THE GRADE HUNTS
THATS WHATS I AM MISSING, I NEW SOMETHING WAS REALLY DIFFERENT. Since most of the really good hounds I owned back then, I hunted Grade on Friday nights. THe Good Old Days.
Our club has a hunt the first Monday of each month..any dog can enter,,,we hunt UKC nite hunt rules ,,90 minute hunts ,,can win a cast without plus points.10- dollar entry.. the member that has the most cast wins out of 8 hunts wins 500 dollars ,,2nd place anyone that entered in at least 6 hunts goes in for a 200 dollar drawing. We have this hunt right after our monthly meeting ..good way to get members to show up.

Back when i started the grade dogs could compete in UKC. hunts. I think they quit because it didnt look good when the grade dogs had high scoreing dog of the hunt. Usually in my area if you wanted to spectate on a cast with the best you went with the grade cast, those guys had no reason to be there unless they were leading the real deal...

Cowboy- that's what is happening now.

Actually I won't own a registered dog. All I will own is grade dogs. I can't rightly say registered dog owners are doing much good for the over all well being of coonhuting. Not that i'm interested in either type of competition hunting. But grade doesn't always equal pot licker. I've had much better luck over the years with grades than spending tons of money on supposed good blooded pups. To each his own.
Our club held an open event last year. Advertised it pretty well locally. We had 5 dogs on the bench, 4 dogs in the field trial and 4 in the nite hunt. We had 1 grade dog show up - a cur that left after the bench show. I don't think we'll have anymore open events.

In my guess UKC has already fixed that with HTX hunts. The first Hunt I went on with a registered dog was off Houses Bawlie, World Champion. I did get there late and I got drawn out in the grade class just to help them make up a 4 dog cast. They cut our fanny. Not cheating, my dog was not ready. So think about HTX if you ain't scaid. LOL
